It generally means that the site they linked from for their pic, is blocking it from being used here.

Generally in that case there will be a graphic replacing the one linked to stating that the host does not allow remote linking but this is true in some cases.

The little red X could also mean that the link to the picture is broken, messed up or that the picture they are linking to is no longer at that address.

It could also mean that the website or host that the image is hosted on is down and unavailable at the moment.

It could also mean that if you are behind a firewall of some sort it might not load the image for you specifically. It'll do that to me from work, but I can load just fine at home.

Those are just acid-flashbacks that you are having. The rest of us see the pictures. Unless, coincidentally, we are having flashbacks of our own.

i dont think thats it, some people have pics in their sig lines that i never see, its always just a box with a red X in it, it cant not download properly EVERY time!!

Most likely it is a broken link to an image. Either the person typed in the link wrong, the image is being block at the server (Yahoo/Geocities does this) or perhaps the image they are linking moved.
