Why is golf so popular?

I don't know if anyone here plays golf. But it seems everyone I know does. Soooooooo, I just bought a nice set of clubs and have practiced all day. I couldn't hit the driving range due to the trees down from Ivan. But I've putted my skinny butt off.
It's amazing to me that golf has become so popular in such a seeming short time. I played soccer [football] in the army and loved it. But there is not much of that in America. I played American football, basketball, wrestling and track in high school many years ago. cough, cough.
Now it seems everyone is out for golf. I'll admit it's fun but I don't understand the popularity. I don't think it's just a fad. We've even got a golf network here now. Damn, is this part of getting older? No more contact sports?

Ah the mysteries of golf! Been around for a very long time - especially here in Scotland!

Tried it a couple of times but just couldnt hit the flipping ball far enough! Ok at the putting though!

Using some skill learned in the pool hall, and other skills developed from fishing, golf is a good walk spoiled.

It's very unlike any game I've ever played Joe. I spent the day working on my putting and grip. damn, you really have to concentrate. lol

Took me four years before I could reliably hit a ball down a fairway. But, really, it was satisfying. Lots of concentration, lots of adjusting for the environment, and there's something very cool about having your own clubs.

Kinda like having your own broken in baseball glove.
