Why is Finland the world’s happiest country for 7 years in a row?

Government has something to do with it.

Finland has extensive spending on public welfare. Healthcare and public transport are mentioned in the video. The spending minimizes the number of people experiencing the worst life (homeless, unable to access healthcare). The bureaucracy works and keeps the infrastructure of society intact.

It’s also a very high trust society. High trust in media and the government.

Finland and Norway both have very strong social programs, which help those members of society who need it. If government cares for the people,the people care for the government.

In America, it is considered good for America to take care of our corporations.

In America, it is considered good for corporations to treat labor as a liability on the P&L sheets as well as to cut labor costs as much as possible.

Which means in America, we believe it is good for America to abuse American workers.

That's a lot to digest.

The book "The Nordic Theory of Everything" is a good read. I believe it was written by a Finnish lady would married someone from the US and moved over. Clears up much misunderstanding of their system.

Thanks for the suggestion. The book sounds interesting. I found this video about it:

How the hell did you get from A to B on this one?

Who gets to define the metric "economic freedom?"
Who gets to measure? It's a meaningless metric.

The Economic Freedom metric is from the Heritage Foundation. You may have heard of them. They’re very right wing. So if the metric is biased, it’s not in the way you suspect. 😄

How do you measure economic freedom?

We measure economic freedom based on 12 quantitative and qualitative factors, grouped into four broad categories, or pillars, of economic freedom:

  • Rule of Law (property rights, government integrity, judicial effectiveness);
  • Government Size (government spending, tax burden, fiscal health);
  • Regulatory Efficiency (business freedom, labor freedom, monetary freedom); and
  • Open Markets (trade freedom, investment freedom, financial freedom).
Each of the twelve economic freedoms within these categories is graded on a scale of 0 to 100. A country’s overall score is derived by averaging these twelve economic freedoms, with equal weight being given to each.
