Why I like the Germans...

There food is great especially their sausages and sauerkraut, there beer is tasty and strong, their culture is genuine, their accent is masculine and they give the English a run for their money during soccer matches.

They're also one of the finest fighting forces in the world ...witness the actions of the Afrika Korps during the Second World War. Can the people help it if their leaders were insane carpet chewers...

They sing great songs, they are fiercely independent, they are extremely friendly once they get to know you and all in all I would prefer them on my side than some other nations I could mention (but won't).

Oh and their women are stunning...

I am in reference to Nazi atrocities,the French and Arab branches of my family lost many to the Nazis,and the American side lost some as well.

In my reply, I assert that Europeans dwell on the past more than Americans. I do not assert that Americans do not dwell on the past, nor to what degree, if they do, but that ppman is on thin ice in his assertion about Americans. He's actually well through it and into the lake, in fact.

Note that nowhere do I assert that history should be ignored, which is what your post implies. You seem to be attacking an argument I did not make.

However, since you are bringing up the subject, I do believe it is counter-productive to dwell on the past to the extent that children carry on the feuds of their parents and grandparents. If I were to ask any Native American if they want anyone to quit dwelling on the past, I would hope they would say, "Yes, that war is over." Because it is over. And nursing old grudges is what created a WWII out of WWI. People should be evaluated on what they themselves do, not what their parents or grandparents did. That doesn't mean anything should be forgotten, but it's history. It just seems absurd for one to read an account of something that happened hundreds of years ago and want to make some descendant of someone who wronged one of one's ancestors pay for the crime, even with their life. How many of the innumerable wrongs that have been committed throughout recorded history can be made right? A hundred? A hundred thousand? Or even one, if the people who were wronged, and those who wronged them are now dead? And what about events not recorded? Or recorded wrongly? The whole idea is ridiculous.

There's certainly limited opportunity for those living on reservations, and it's been established (Brown v. Board) that separation and equality are not compatible. There are recent immigrants, many trained at the expense of American corporations, some of whom are making millions in Silicon Valley, while Native Americans eat dioxin-laced fish. Maybe it's time for Native Americans to join the rest of American society, and for the "reservation" concept to be discarded.
