Why have I never heard of colloidal oatmeal?

I was given some cream by my doctor to help with an itchy spot on my ankle that we haven't been able to diagnose, and it's made of colloidal oatmeal.
Never having heard of it, I googled.
Apparently I can make this myself, and it's good for all sorts of itches.
It would have been good to know about when my kids were small and tried to peel off their skin when they had chickenpox!

i knew, but i didn't know it was called colloidal, but i was aware of the practice of using oatmeal to fight itchiness.

I thought oatmeal bath and calamine slathering were standard protocol for chicken pox... Since like, Columbus' day.

I have always associated the word 'colloidal' with minerals.
Reading about colloidal oatmeal was baffling, until I looked on google.

Perfectly reasonable. When I saw the word 'colloidal' (not an often used word) my thought was 'colloidal Silver'.
