why erotic stories?

Hiya everyone.

I am new to Literotica.

Well - I have been reading the stories for some time - but I have only just signed up, and i have only just hit these boards.

My first foray into the bulletin boards has intrigued me - to say the least - and prompted me ask the question in the title to this thread.

I have about half a dozen erotic stories ready to roll, and look forward to the feedback they will receive with mixed feelings. I will be keen to hear any advice on the "craft" of writing, but have a certain amount of dread concerning moral judgments that may be made about them! I was just reading a post where the notion was put forward that the use of terms such as "slut" and "bitch" reveal a mysoginist outlook, and a lack of interest in women as anything more then sex machines. Oh dear - i am in trouble!

I am very interested in the personalities, desires and motives of my characters, because to me, that is essentially what eroticism is!

I think I have written because eroticism holds a deep fascination for me. It is at the core of our existence. I do not think this is an exaggeration. I have attempted to capture that elusive magical thing...but I don't really know why. Sometimes i think my time would have been better spent "researching" the genre *s*.

Any ideas?

As in all things, use your common sense, and don't believe everything you read. As for writing remember it is always better to show, than to tell. It pulls the reader into the story. As for feedback, take it with a grain of salt or three, and anylize the critique. What are they saying, what aren't they saying, and why are they saying it. As for the voting system, well, just remember that not everybody votes kosher here.

I did the same as you, I've been reading lit stories for years, only found the bulletin boards a few months ago (when i got round to posting one of my own stories) and I am so glad i did! theres a great little community here!

Why erotic stories? For a plumpish greying dude with a small pecker and a distinct lack of stamina it is the best way I can think of combining my two favourite activities. Porn star is definitely out for me.

I love writing and one day I would love to make money from my scribbling. Until then Lit is an awesome place to hone your craft. Most of the folks here are more than willing to help out with advice and even the occasional bit of editing. Being able to rub shoulders with some great authors is inspiring to say the least. Hell I've even managed to pick up a couple of muses here.

Don't worry about the language used in your stories. Likie English Lady already pointed out it's usually a case of different strokes for different folks and everything has to be taken in context anyway. Post your stories gb, and enjoy. I'd love to read them.

I'm surprised how many Aussies are on this thread!
I basically write because it's my fantasy life, and I like to live within the female protagonists for awhile. Other times, it's the wow...what if that happened...sort of thing.
I've tried writing male protagonists, but it's very difficult to get right. I end up asking some guy I know for advice.
Music sets me off with ideas, but so does simply being on the train. I keep most of my stories on the backburner, cutting & pasting, changing all the time, and often the ideas from different stories feed into each other. I get waves of mad writing, then nothing for weeks. I haven't really thought about it before, but I wonder if with me it's partly menstrual.
Oh, and writing sexy stuff makes me wet, which is fun too. Very distracting at times, but fun.

English as a new language

I am a native from Liberia. Though it has had a lot of conflict in the last 20 years we will come out of it someday. We still have tropical jungles, beaches and tribal cultures that make it a wonderful place.

As an exobiologist I decided to pursue academic opportunities outside of my homeland.

In that pursuit I was very uncomfortable with English as a primary language. I could speak and read, yes, but not with the ease of colleagues and professionals I met along the way.

I turned to erotic literature primarily as a way to understand English at a deeper level and to become comfortable with this colorful mosaic of speech & thought so that I could really understand what everyone around me was REALLY saying, how they used the language in their interactions, and, deep down, what most of the people were truly thinking beneath their nice smiles and "glad to meet you" sentiments.

Now I know. Finally. Perverted bastards and horny sluts abound all around me. It's pretty much like in my native Liberia. We just pronounce "fuck" differently (although we use it back home as well).

This site is for letting out all the fantasies and dreams that are totally unacceptable in other places. You'll probably offedn some people no matter what you say, so you'd might as well say what you want.
I too have no problem with what people say in the height of passion. I don't have much problem with what people say in real life either. I have no problem with non-consensual sex or BDSM or people being mean to each other, because this is fiction, and this is where we explore things like that.
Be forewarned though, that at some point in your career here you will be blasted by some anonymous hate mail saying something like "You suck, your story sucks. You can't write, you make me want to puke, I hope you die." It doesn't mean anything. We all get them.

For me, writing erotica is both a means of getting me to actually start writing again, and a means of exploring my sexual fantasies in a very safe and controlled environment. As I wrote, I got great feedback, poor feedback, high and low votes and most of all, developed confidence. Now, my goal is to be published elsewhere (with tougher guidelines, and perhaps even payment). I write non-erotic works, but I do love reading and writing erotica.

For me erotica is a way of using my ability to write. I've tried writing 'serious' or 'proper' writing, but it's never come off. This has given me confidence in my ability and has shown me my flaws and allowed me to improve.

Welcome to Lit btw. I hope your stories are received well, but remember: everyone's opinion is different, but only yours is worth a damn. And maybe mine as well .

Thank you all for your thoughts, your insights,your welcomes, and your encouragement.

One thing that intrigues me is that people are saying this is a place of "fantasy". All of my stories so far are drawn from life experiences, althought they are embellished or condensed in places to make them read well. I suppose I might get around to true fantasy writing at some point also - but I haven't yet.

To Hogjack: I agree with you about perverted bastards and horny sluts being all around us! Most guys are perverted sluts - we all know that. It is my experience that there are a lot of hot horny chicks out there also who are up for just about anything - if they feel they have sufficient trust in the guy suggesting it. I am 41yo and it has taken me the better part of my adult life to realise this. Some chicks i date take my filthiest most extreme fantasies and push them further than i dared hope. If only i had got into the habit of suggesting them 20 years sooner. This fascinates me. I notice that a number of my stories deal with the nice girl/rampant slut dichotomy. It fascinates me, and kind of torments me also - which is perhaps another reason i write.
