Why do you write?

Having now had a day or so to think about it, I guess that I write because I can. Or at least because other people think that I can.

I sold my first short story when I was still at high school and, one way or another, people have been paying me to put words on paper ever since. Which is not to say that I write for the money. If I didn't enjoy writing, I am sure that I would have stopped writing years ago. But I do enjoy it. And while I subscribe to Graham Greene's idea that 500 well-written words is a decent day's work, it's a rare day on which I don't write 1,500-2,000 words.

I think most writers write to affect the hearts and minds of others. Art is a sublime sort of influence.

Sorry about the dig, Jimmy, but I couldn't resist the opening you left me.

But, seriously, about the one-bomb comment. I've addressed that before with you, and I can still re-assure you that I've never one-bombed any author here or anywhere else. If I find a work that bad, I ignore it, and if I find it good, I would never downgrade it because I didn't like the author. And I never post any comments anonymously; I always stand by what I say.

TIO youre a stinky dog turd.

I love these rational exchanges.

I began writing because I felt I could do better than what I was reading at the time. Turned out, it's tougher than it looks, but I have grown. That was the thing for me once I realized the challenge. I wanted to get better at it, and I did. I've gotten better at a lot of things. I have a hard time staying with one thing. Now I have published several stores and they are now on B&N and some other sites. They're not that picky. :) I publish under a different name. I know! You thought my name was actually Grade A Canadian Beef, didn't you?

OMG Youre not? Whoa!

These days its not hard to do better than whats out there.

I was reading some noir last nite, and the opening is about some dude calling a gal for a date. She says yep, and that's the first chapter. Huh?

The other noir was almost as lame. FED EX delivers a package, and the couple is trying guess whats in the box rather than opening it. WHATCHA THINK? I DUNNO, WHACHU THINK? I DUNNO.

Why I write...

I write because it helps me de-stress. It just happens that it's something I'm pretty good at. I'm not saying I'm all that... but the scores on my stories tell me I'm not the worst either. Having so many stories with the coveted "Red H" makes me feel like a winner and a successful writer. I guess I continue because I love it so, and others enjoy my writings. Not everything I've written have make the cut for posting, but what has, has gotten positive feedback.

The stuff I haven't posted is for myself for now. Maybe some of it will make it to others eyes. I'm not sure yet. I do know that I love writing and I hope one day, I will get paid for my writing.

I found my niche as a storyteller. I find a subject worth writing about and it consumes me to tell it completely. Both stories I'm writing are extremely long and seem to go on forever, but I enjoy making each page worth reading and the length never seems to matter after a while.
The comments say to keep writing, so I do. Their votes and comments say I'm doing alright and getting by, so I keep going back and try to improve on what I started with and write the next chapters in a better way that doesn't stand out too much during the transition.
I know shit about the technical aspects of writing and usually cross lines with them, but it's building that fan base from scratch and making something interesting and possibly good/great out of an idea in my head.
That's what I love about writing, not try to be perfect, just good.

To share my twisted ides with like minded people and see what they think.

I think its also a form of immortality. To create something that will last past me.

I don't mean my mother/son incest stuff here, but some of my more serious works are things I want people to read and say "damn"

We aren't being honest with ourselves if any of us deny that one of the reasons we write is for the ego strokes that come in comments or emails and those fun "Red H's" on our profiles.

When the readers and fans get moist or hard from a story, we do too! ;)

It sounds like asking writers why they write is like asking mountain climbers why they climb.

I've always wanted to write, but I spent more time reading how-to-write books and magazines than actually writing.

The animator Chuck Jones said every artist has a thousand bad drawings in them and the only way to get rid of them is to draw them out. Figuring it would be the same for writers, I decided to start drawing my own bad stories out a month ago and figured Literotica would be a great place to practice.

I've only written two stories so far and have received good feedback but few comments. I'm hoping this is because its our nature to comment on things we don't like more often than we comment on things we like.

So that is why I write, to get those bad stories out. I can't wait to see what I put on paper when I get to the good ones!

People don't comment much, full stop. On my stories, even the best-rated ones, about 1% of views translate to votes and only 0.1% comment. (Exception: final chapter of a long series, where people are commenting on the whole series and not just that episode.)

Thanks for the info Bramblethorn, the numbers you listed are consistent with the votes/comments I've received so far.

I read somewhere on Literotica that Incest stories were the most popular and decided to write one (my first story was put in the category but actually doesn't have any incest, unless they count a daughter dildoing a girl that her father is screwing as incest). I see now that Incest is definitely best - when it comes to getting reads/votes/comments.

The incest story has only been posted for 12 hours and has already passed my Halloween contest entry (posted nearly two weeks ago) in nearly every category!

The trick now is to write in a category that doesn't get the same votes/comments and still get them because you write well enough.;).

Good post and add things like top lists along with it. Since we don't gt paid those are the things we strive for.

What I find laughable is the ones who put down the "H" and say it means nothing are usually the ones who don't have to many.

We all like the red H. And I'd love to get a few Ws and Es...

But, like others have said, some stories I wrote just to get them out of my head. Others are experiments in style.

Why do you write? Is it to take place of something missing in your personal life? Does writing allow you to free you inhibitions that you keep tucked away out of fear? Or does you writing help clear your mind by thinking of things that take place in a fictional setting?

I write because I have to write. The ideas come to me, and I have to get them out somehow.
Also, I'm at a point in my life where I've realized that writing is my single most marketable talent, so I'm also writing in order to try to pay my bills.

I think if you have to ask why someone writes then you don't really have a clue. Why do people paint, compose music, sculpt, dance, etc etc? It's human nature for people to express themselves and make sense of the world we live in. The creative arts help us to see the world through different eyes which is a very important aspect of being a well balanced human being.

I write because I'm alive, trying to make sense of my life and my world and my times. I write because humans have told stories for thousands of years so it's instinctual and ingrained into my DNA. I write because it satisfies something inside me to see a story unfold, to experience the creative flow of ideas, and to see other people enjoy that or connect with that.

I write because I am.

I started writing because I had a few ideas which I thought would make good stories. I also thought it sounded fun.

I'm also a big fan of good erotic stories. So it's really fun to be 'that guy' who makes it for other people. I love pushing people's erotic buttons.

As for the ego thing mentioned above, I agree with it, but not for the red H so much. I'm addicted to seeing views/votes/favs go up. It becomes like crack for an author, especially once you've gotten a taste of how big numbers can get.

Nowadays I'm focused mainly on stories. I'm okay if stories don't do well or get low scores. I'm inspired by other great erotic stories I read and I'm interested in exploring the different aspects of erotica, in terms of what can be done. (meaning, making stories that break the mold)

It's also fun.

Yeah, Loving Wives is the Literotica version of the Klingon Age of Ascension ceremony. If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.

I'm writing in Celebs and N&N and both of them are hard to break into to get readers. Your story has to stand out from the others and hold on to them to read it.
I thought I was doing good with 500 readers at the start of Redwood Nine, but now I'm over 7k and holding between 3500-4000 readers each chapter.
Scores are good, as are the comments, but trolls love to 1 bomb and get you out of key spots on top lists. At one point, I had the top 3 spots for stories overall and now it's hard to find one in the top 10.

It's jealousy for the most part, but I figure I have to be doing extremely well to be constantly bombed out of the top positions.
