Not so much a draft note as writing out an author's note at the end of the story before I forget.

A minor issue with the Scarlet Pimpernel stories is that Baroness Orczy was writing a hundred years after the events, but a hundred years before Wikipedia was created. So there are some historical inaccuracies: she has the Reign of Terror, the Committee of Public Safety and French francs a year or two before their time. Things like that.

I've decided to follow this pattern and write my story with elements from the French Revolution that the average reader might expect to see. Storytelling is more important than historical accuracy.

I've noticed that a lot of Aussie slang seems to trend toward "y/ie" endings on words, so I was kinda assuming that, but I still haven't checked. Future Anthy's problem, current Anthy just needs to finish the damn thing.

Problem is I rabbit hole like a crazy bird, so if I go chase that, then I'll get distracted by something else and I've totally lost my flow, so I just leave notes to do something later so I can keep in the flow of the thing unless it's super important: like how many teats in a Tasmanian devil pouch, and mechanics of the pouch, because I'm a weirdo

I used to leave myself notes as I wrote all the time before I went on hiatus, usually in the rough draft when I didn't want to interrupt the flow of the writing by fixing something or thinking too hard about it. When I started writing again last year I dropped that habit and tried fixing things in situ before moving on, and it made writing more of a slog, more onerous, because I'd ruin my flow and it'd take a minute to get back into the headspace to write. So, starting a couple stories ago, I returned to leaving notes for myself so as to keep going while also reminding myself to do something, or verify a piece of information, or figure out if something I wrote was worth keeping.

Sometimes, these notes amuse me, and it got me curious about how many others do this, and what those notes look like. So, if you have any notes from existing or old WIPs, or from outlines, or anywhere else, feel free to share them here! Let's get a peek at the inner workings of the creative process before we push out a final product!

Yes...just who are you?


I have more idea's than I can deal with, especially since I tend to be a slow writer once I get into a story. Yet, I don't want to lose the idea. Here is my most recent:

Saturday Night Threesome (working title)

What starts as a one-night bar hook-up possibly turns into something more.

I create my character's, with both physical descriptions and jobs/education and personality quirks. These may not make it into the story directly, but it's something I think about when writing. I usually research for names and I keep those in an attached comment, something like: "is considered a strong, classic name with deep historical roots tied to Roman power and mythology."


Then I create the basic premise:

Sakura and Mio are college students and friends. Been in the US for two years while they go to school. Met as dorm roommates in their freshman year. Both study (something non-traditional) Avoid stereotypes. Play against stereotypes when possible. Both have part-time jobs (one a barista and the other???) Family all back in Japan? Primary language is Japanese, but they are proficient in English. They meet Julian in a bar, all three looking for a basic hook up. Does that change and they turn into a throuple?

Family won’t be happy that they are:

• Sharing a man.
• He’s Caucasian.
• He’s not college educated.

I may write some of what will turn into the actual story, depending on my mood and what else I am working on. Anywhere from a couple of sentences to 1k words. I leave it open ended so when I return, I can think about how I want the story to proceed and ultimately end. FYI - I am a plotter.

Then I file it away, to return another day.

Because the story is set largely in a convent, and I can't be arsed to look up the proper words for all the areas yet. Sometimes my Catholic upbringing sends something bubbling to the surface ("nave" and "sacristy" for example) and I quickly jot it down for checking.
