Some of the better erotica here at Lit is actually written by professional authors. I think they just post stories here for fun.

As for the idea that writing for Lit as a means to launching a career writing erotica, I think that's a pathway to tears. The money to be made from writing erotica is miniscule when compared to the money to be made from other kinds of writing.

The best of Literotica is better than much of the erotica available for purchase. Why? A lot of the commercial stuff is too slick, too cliched, so formulaic. Yes, we have some of that here, but I said...the best of Literotica.

I enjoy hearing about real people fantasies. These arent penthouse forums but its like watching amateur porn. Its more authentic, more real. And you can talk to the authors directly if you want to. I love this question. I want to know what readers think. I'm sure the reasons are as varied as there are readers.

I myself started reading a couple years before I became a Lit member. My reasons were more for pleasure, and the ease of finding the stories, without having to buy them online and feel like someone was going to find out when it got mailed to me. (I always envisioned the postman smirking at me for some reason.) So ... anonymity I suppose.

I think it's more authentic. It's not written to sell books. It's written because the author liked writing it. It comes off as real.

And authentic gets me off better than contrived.

Same thing goes for audios. Give me a woman just talking about her desires over her reading a scripted story with fake orgasm sounds.

I think amateur erotica is usually more authentic, if that's the right word...Maybe it's because the author isn't worried about marketability?
But also part of it is convenience and practicality. Sometimes it takes me 10-20 entries before I find what I'm looking for on lit, something that speaks to my predilections but also doesn't include turn offs. I think if I looked harder for published erotica, I'd find things that tickled my fancy but it would stress out my credit card in the process lol.

Well, I'm a value shopper, and it gives me more than I pay for. That said, I have discovered 5 or 6 authors here who I have commissioned works from or purchased their e-books because I like their stuff. But it's fun to be able to access authors here or look up and read works by people with whom I interact on the forums.
