Welfare should be and was meant to be a short term tool to give a helping hand to those who need one and have no other choices.

Not the gross monster it is today.

In my lifetime my family has gone from well off to almost rich to be on Welfare and Christmas thanks to the Salvation army.

I remember it was a tough road back but got there we did ASAP.

To my parents not to be able to work and support themselves and us was intolerable and shameful.

They were raised up during the Great depression went through WWII and knew what hardship,hard work and pride was all about.

I never thought of any other way than working to get money.

Today our country is fucked up. We have people who EXPECT to receive welfare as a long term source of income! Trained for it and catered to because of it.

One of the reasons poverty will always exist is because it is a relative thing. There are people who are considered to be impoverished but are better off than some well-off people in other countries or even those in the US a century ago.

There's nothing new about welfare. It has been around since before The Big O was born, but it used to be a temporary thing, not a career. It was LBJ with his "War on Poverty" who really multiplied it, and it has grown ever since, except for a period in the 1990's. Now there are sometimes as many as four generations living off government handouts.

how would I know? I work in a directly related field... you get you your info from pundits telling you what to think?
