Why do people say so many goodbyes online before they stop the conversation?

goodnight siren!

I find people doing that with me too, and yes, it does get very annoying!! Now that I have said that, I wish you a goodnight.

Oh BTW, how have ya been? Good I hope!! U take care! bye

And one more thing, yes I am being a silly gator, and Im not leaving just yet. I know this is really stupid of me, but the lack of sleep is starting to take effect!
Love ya siren!

The Criminal.

Being the perpetuator of this hidious crime, I must tell you why I do it. I have on occasion said goodbye to several people, but they have then gone on to start up another conversation. Now I was brought up to be polite, and like to know, that the person I'm talking too really has finished what he/she is saying, before I cut them off.

But there is an easy solution to this problem, just agree with the person your talking too, to end the talk with goodbye, goodnight, bye or whatever.

So Siren, the next time we talk, when you say goodbye, your out of there. LOL

The ever lovable Carl.

Me too

I confess I am both guilty and a victim of this heinous crime.

I have a theory though if you want to read it...

Everyone wants to get in the last word.

It happens in everyday conversations all the time. Admittedly it is not so protracted IRL, but you remember that time when you were talking to someone as you got into the lift and they were staying on that floor.. as the door closed, you just had to say that last seeya didn't you?
and the last time you climbed into your car and said goodbye to your friend.. did you beep your horn as you drove off? Or that time you had that conversation on the phone with your best friend or your girlfriend or boyfriend? .. "No, You hang up first!"

We have all done it.
Fess up people! :D

I have noticed that also on IM. I find it amusing but try and end them. But no big deal in the road of life. Just wanted to get in the last word...:)

Damn, one-upped again.

You did!. <this response is just a mirage.:D>

aaaaahhhhhhhggggg! I give! <dammit, have to go to work>

Please! Your driving me nuts.

Stop it the pair of you, my computer can't take this anymore, it's asking why I keep getting email from you two.

Carl.

DAMMIT DAMMIT SONUVABITCH!

DAMN. I just became REALLY, REALLY EXPERIENCED with a freakin' floating virgin head thingy!
(No offense, FH)

aaaaahhhhhhhggggg! I give! <dammit, have to go to work>

<raises arms in victory!>

<ponders a second>

OH SHIT!

Really Really Pissed off.

Congratulations Lovely, even if it was wasted.

The ever lovable Carl.

I must confess to you all that I have been known to say goodbye and then stick around for a bit more and then say it again and the vicious cycle continues. I think your right when you say that it has something to do with wanting to get the last word in.....

I confess!!

Okay I do the same. I must admit that I find myself saying about 10 different ways to say goodbye, goodnight or whatever before I go offline.

I don't mean to offend anyone. Did I ever do that to you Siren?? :)

Oh and Lovely Latina!!!!

Where have you been smilie girl?? And how the hell are you?? :D

Oh and I think that Nurse is really giving you competition for the title as Smilie Girl.

I've been smitten

Hi Siren,

Have you ever thought that the person saying all these goodbyes, might not want to leave you. That might be the problem, your too damned interesting to talk too.

Hugs

Carl.

Carl, I think you're on to something...

While I may not be "smitten" with you, Siren, I do find that there are certain people that I'm reluctant to end a conversation with (yes, you're one of them honey)...thus, the good-bye's go on forever and ever and ever.

So, see ya' later hon, bye, adios, au revoir, sleep well, and all that stuff. :D

Never and I have a habit of going through 2 or 3 goodbyes at the end of the night, but she and I also have a good way to keep it from going on for 45 minutes.

"Goodnight, Never."

"Goodnight, Endlessly."

And guess who's no longer online? You've got it. The secret is.. Sign off. *shrug*

I think it must be those years of watching 'Big Red' commercials. You just want it to last a little longer..

*ponders stuff* I'm better at doing thing on ICQ than the phone. I always feel impolite just hanging up on another. I think most people don't want to get in the last line as much as they feel awkward just shutting down 'Q.

And what does this have with sex, anyway? I need to inject some sex into this thread.. er, oh yeah baby, come here and I'll show you how long 'Big Red' can last.

*I'm shaggalisious, baby.*

I'm a victim of excessive goodbyes, too. I have two people that do that, and it drives me nuts. I like to limit it to giving warning that I'm ready to end the conversation, and then a goodbye. But, yeah, I feel bad about just shutting down the IM window. I also have this person I talk to that simply says goodbye, and most times before I even have the chance to reply, logs off AOL! Fucking rude if you ask me. But then, nobody asked me. LOL

I saw this thread and it struck a chord. I do this ALL the time (but so does seemingly everyone I talk to).

I agree that a big part of it has to do with the "last word syndrome" that several have mentioned above. I find myself and others "doing battle" for the last word on the phone all the time.

The telephone analogy made me think of something else, though. Maybe it's also that typing to someone online doesn't allow one to use that "I'm about to end the conversation" tone of voice (you know the one) that he ordinarily uses on the telephone to help bring the conversation to an easy, polite conclusion.

Now that I think about it, the telephone is the ONLY place people use that tone of voice, and that makes me suspect that maybe it "evolved" for the purpose of replacing analagous body language cues that we always use in face-to-face conversations.

If so, maybe these redundant goodbyes serve a useful social purpose. Even so, they're still pretty annoying! I hope we can "evolve" a much less annoying (and faster) way to end our chats. Maybe I'll start the trend... as I realize I want to ease out of a conversation I'll type an asterisk after each sentence or something. Just a thought...

I'm curious to hear what everyone else has to say about this. Bye. Talk to y'all later. g'day.*

;)

I'm sorry Siren, I have to vent. I have two friend who never say goodbye. It happened to me again five minutes ago. I'm in mid-conversation with someone and BOOM they are out of there. I'm then left hanging for over 20min. I know, stupid of me! I can see that they are still online but on to greener pastures. I consider myself an interesting person but might have to re-evaluate the situation if people keep on leaving mid-stream. What is worse is that these are my two best friends who do it to me. I think I would prefer somebody taking ten minutes to say good-bye.

Once again thank you for letting me vent.

In a busy chat room saying goodbye is somtimes a way of focusing the attention back on you for a few minutes before actually leaving, that way you can get out a few comments you meant to get out earlier. Sometimes the server is slow, and you know that once you say "goodbye" it might be a solid 60 seconds before anyone reads it, and you want to be polite and wait for a return "Okay, see ya." But, I don't do it any more. I say everything I have to say, then post a quick "Gotta run. Bye all!" and leave.

Gotta run. Bye all.

This is a problem?

I am so guilty of all of these things, but it's so much fun. The whole you hang up first thing is part of the flirting/bonding...
