why do people reply to threads without reading the entire thing?

wonder why??? hmmm lots of reasons I'd guess

Well just before reading this post (I do mean JUST before although now because the site kicked me out and I had to retype my response its not so just anymore; {I’m just a little pissed off}) I had done exactly what you mentioned, that is post without reading the whole thread. However I did note so in my opening of my comments on that instance.

I did read this whole thread and there are some various thoughts highlighted. Some that struck me were comments that described perceptions and use of Lit. I know for myself I have always since first coming to this site many many moons ago (notice I am the senior Lit member commenting on this thread!) found the intellectual, open, fun, informative, sensible, challenging etc (many adjective apply here) discussions on ADULT and other topics wonderfully engaging, knowledgeable, entertaining (again many positive terms apply) etc. I have a great respect and appreciation for the commentaries and manners of sharing forthcoming here. I personally have always been more drawn by the topics and/or issues discussed than in seeking ‘community ties’ so to speak. Thus it did kind of stand out to me in the comments about one’s perception of how to use the Lit site that can certainly make a difference in how a person approaches posting. If you look at my years of use vs. volume of posts you’ll notice that obviously there are magnitudes of posts I read without comment and great gaps in time away from visiting Lit as well. Likewise I notice when I think back on how I post it tends to be topic and information focused not very often interactive with fellow users. That by no means is any disrespect of other users its just not how I use an online anonymous site, for me it’s a place to connect and convey on topics, share and hear opinion/ideas not develop anything. I do most often read a whole thread or at least skim the majority because it makes sense to (that’s the main reason) to know whether you are being repetitive, what additional points come up, to counter an ensuing comment if you have valid cause/info etc but I can see how someone who is not looking at Lit in that ‘becoming a part of the community’ sense could be less likely to follow through.

Again only my personal approach but if a thread has evolved to become a bit social in nature, for example a lot of back and forth discussion that has delved past the original question/topic then I am usually not as likely to post or if I do I make reference to the fact that I see the topic has strayed but I note something helpful to add regarding the first inquiry or something to that extent. I don’t know if that’s been seen as not cooperating with the thread but I wouldn’t be likely to go much for the social interaction and that is in no means a criticism of any fellow Lit members at all, its just not me.

Another factor is plain ole technology. Example I was on dial up until I got high speed internet about a month ago. Any idea how slow it is to read through pages of thread text waiting for all our avatars and tags etc to load. SLOW AS HELL!! Now because I seldom do post without reading through a whole thread, you’ll also notice I seldom posted on threads that were long because I could not take the time to the read the whole thing, but that doesn’t mean all folks use the same sense. And I saw various comments about reading the guidelines, stickies etc…valid thoughts. However again perception of use may be a factor….if some are thinking of Lit as an entertainment (and its generally anonymous at that; think about facebook and how poorly some people’s sense is about what they post on there where they know everyone) source then they may not be as likely to think ‘ought to look at these guidelines etc’ Also how many people read the directions in full before starting a project…some do, most I know don’t; or how many people look up instructions for what they don’t know how to do? Some do….many don’t…don’t most of us pay someone else to do our taxes, fix our cars, tile our floors but we could learn to do all of it….”learn’ key word…..Hell most of the people in my real world can’t figure out the difference between ‘reply’ and ‘reply all’ ….so I know they couldn’t figure out how to research an old thread on the site etc…or how to consider forum etiquette lol, there are technologically savvy and the technologically retarded and far and few in between lol.

Well those are just some thoughts that came to mind that might factor in on how some people post without reading a whole thread, By the way…..just for info sake I have been using Lit since 2001….I should have tenure, and I don’t think I’ve ever read a guideline or stickie etc….maybe at some point but anyways

Main thing is I appreciate all of the users of this site because that what makes it so rich in energy, information, entertainment all in such a respectful, intellectual and supportive nature and mannerism….I know there are exceptions but overall and the majority of the time this positive mode I compliment is what prevails…I’ve never found on other sites/forums that’s why I’ve returned here for over a decade now!

Happy Weekend all!!
