Why black?

It seems that black attire is common among kinksters of all variations.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why this is?

I do believe black for a Dominant carries with it a message of authority and nearly anyone can look terribly sexy and appealing in black.

Also, how important is attire to you when scening?

:)

The blood doesn't show up too badly...

I personally have no idea why black is the chosen colour, though I suspect it is tied to such things as taboos, darker side of sexuality, sensual pleasures, and the such. For us, we don't bother with clothing specifics when scening. Maybe this woud change if we were more into public scening, but at home or whereever we might choose, we usually just go with the moment as it occurs.

I wear all black all the time, in fact I have for years, since high school. I wear it for the same reason I only wear skirts, I just don't like pants, they don't feel sexy to me, I don't feel sexy in them. Black is mysterious, its alluring, and hell, its a little creepy...all things I like to present...black is the greatest color (or non color if you want to be technical) it goes with everything, it always looks good, it doesn't show wear and tear too much (stians, etc) and you never have to worry that you won't match (as long as you don't let your blacks fade into greys)

I wore black most of my life:jeans, boots, vest and tees, now I wear pastels even pink lip and nail color. Most of my play clothes are reds, pinks, whites and of course I do have the black corset, heel and stockings.
As far as toys all are bondage gear including collar are black.
Toys,we have many colors,2 white floggers a yummy red one and of course the wicked braided knotted that is black, almost frogot a blue one with only 4 long falls.I made the Tawse a rich brown, several straps browns and one black one I make all the leather toys so he gets to choose.(he loves the way the white floggers look against crimson skin)
We like colors, but black is wicked and still a fav of mine. Black shows good on me blnd light skin.SEXY SEXY

I find this sort of question to be quite fascinating, as it ties into basic sexuality and cultural influences.
On another thread, we discussed the idea of "erotic" elements of all kinds being based on what are very basic and primitive responses.
Just as a fer-instance, the stylized "maid's uniform" did not exist prior to (most likely-Hollywood influenced) the 20's or so. Yet it's still recognized as a flirtatious icon today.
Likewise the "fetish" standards of rubber, PVC, and leather, all relatively of recent vintage. (folks have always worn leather, of course, but not in a fetish context, I'll wager)

So, is the "dipped in black" look a fairly recent cultural trend?

I recall that during the Feudal period, in Japan, a glimpse of a woman's red "inner" kimono was considered to be quite flirtatious....

It makes you look thinner.

Johnny beat me to my initial thought
Plus it makes it harder to see you coming (assuming your sub isn't blindfolded) when playing in a dim room
And it's harder to find nice leather in other colors :D

Black velvet with pearls.... black satin with gold....

As navarre said ... Black makes me look thinner. That's the biggest reason I like it.

red, white and black are the most distuinguishable "colors" to a baby... maybe we grow up with that.. yanno...

white skin, red markings, black leather... (or black skin, red markings and black leather... even more enphasis on black, whoo.)

Dark colors are slimming, all cuts are not. A black mumu will not make anyone look thinner. It's all about the cut of the clothing for me, not the color.

And I find black washes me out, I'm too pale so I go for red which brings out the pink in my cheeks. I wear a lot of warm colors ... pink, peach, tangerines. I also enjoy olive greens that make my eyes glow and my hair seem more golden. I avoid purple that makes me look like I haven't slept in weeks, yellow that makes me look like my skin is dying and bright tennessee orange which only looks good on a few select people.

I find red MORE daring then black. Everyone can wear black and it's just too common in my field. You see too many artists and architects wearing black head to toe. But make it a red dress or pink or something and you're a hit.

But back to what I said before ... it doesn't matter what color your clothing is if the cut is not flattering and the size is wrong. I too often see people wearing clothes that are ill fit. And then they'll also wear styles because they are popular or trendy, not because they look attractive in those clothes. It's always a damn shame when attractive people make themselves look bad by doing this.

gotta agree, I love the red, it always makes a statement, but as i said, I just have been wearing all black for so long, I do not feel comfortable in anything else, all black works for me, it makes me feel good, and whether its cliche or not, well, i just don't care. The only other color I occasionally wear is a nice blood red. A blood red leather collar, a blood red pair of tights under a skirt, a blood red bra underneath a low cut something or another, so when you bend over just right, someone gets a peak..just a touch, it doens't ruin the effect I make, and it even adds a bit...

looks more expensive, always. So I look richer and thinner. I like to wear safety yellow leather armbands with my black leather corset though, a nice industrial looking touch.

Classic power colour. Other common colours are red (again, a power colour), and white (the innocent/virginal thing.)

It could be fun experimenting though. How about a Dom in paisley? Would that work for you? :p

i grew up in nyc too...dunno if the black is a coincidence :p

Not!

;)

What about a Domme in soft, lacey white?

Seriously.

Complete agreement with black, red, and white. The air feels more ominous and ritualistic when he's in black. Red would make me think of a faster-paced, less tension-filled violence. And white...well, it's my preferred color to be found in. I feel helpless, and I like it.

But we too don't dress for scenes most of the time, so this is mostly hypothetical.

Paisley....not so much.

I have an eye on this white suddenly-last-summer halter dress in latex at house of whacks.

Call it my love of things retro acting up, but I want to look like a creamy 50's or 60's pinup as I beat the crap out of someone ala Eric Stanton. There's something about the American 50's and perversion lurking under the facade of all that boomtime facist expansion that tickles my visuals. Retro lingerie, (thank you Frishman's) and fully fashioned stockings, are a girls best friend.

I love the idea of a Domme in white or baby pink, particularly the younger Domme, talk about a Trojan Horse and false advertising.

One of my favorite fetish outfits was a Dorothy costume at a halloween playparty, blue and white gingham and puffed sleeves, big ruby heels, beating a severe masochist to red welted and slumping in hir bonds, everyone asking me "whose girl I was" all night.

Would you feel powerful wearing natural colored leather?
Could you feel dominated by someone wearing natural colored leather?
I couldn't.
Black is a power thing to me, it is contrast against the other colors, it is a void, it envelopes.
