Why are the people up for political office such Scumbags?

It's not just a US thing, for the most part.

Why, in a Democracy, are the only people seeking to be lifelong public servants such(for the most part) terrible people?

Should we raise the pay?

Politicians aren't nice people, but it is unfair to expect them to be *nice*

They make the tough choices, and have to make hard deal and choices. You can't live in that sort of shark-like experience and not be tough and to a degree have a sense of ruthlessness.

Honestly, DN I don't equate making tough choices with being a scumbag.

I would still argue that power corrupts...haven't you ever seen a nice person get promoted and end up drunk with their own power? Ever had a boss who feels the need to constantly remind people that they're the boss? Same principle, but writ exponentially larger.
