They refer to Tazer as a non-lethal weapon, which is true, until the criminal takes the cops gun and shoots him in the head.
Wouldn't it be better if politicians told their citizens that they are required to comply with police commands? That would be the simplest and most honest "police" reform. Is their any doubt that Mr. Brooks would be alive today had he simply complied with the officers? Even Mr. Floyd would be alive had he complied. Clearly, in neither case, the police didn't set out on a call to kill someone. Even that old guy in Buffalo. Comply with a lawful order and you won't end up with a fractured skull.
I guess this is victim blaming to an extent, but it's true for sure.
Maybe if citizens felt that there would be real consequences for abuse of police power, they would be more likely to comply. I think that's where reform should be directed. Make cops personally liable for rights violations. Fire bad cops quickly. Make sure police understand their oath and that they are gone when they violate it.
You can also change the way we police. The current approach is demonizing police and rewarding evil. The world is already becoming more dangerous for law abiding people. Cops are quitting and cops see no reason to engage. I don't blame them.

My solution, proposed elsewhere, is to disengage "white" cops from dealing with blacks as much as possible. Remove and eliminate flash points and situations with potential conflict as much as feasible.

Remove white cops completely from black-majority communities and neighborhoods. White cops should not be dealing directly with black subjects in major cities. There are plenty of skilled, capable black officers to engage directly with subjects. More need to be hired.

"Reform" is imperfect as it deals with behavior and decision making.

Remove white cops from areas in cities and areas where black populations are the highest.

The cop with his weight on his back probably had as much effect as the one on his neck. When you're flat on the ground your chest has to have room to expand and push off the ground in order to breathe. It's even harder when your hands are cuffed behind your back when flat on the ground and somebody putting weight on your back, let alone your neck as well.

I'd settle for a police force that used de-escalation as a primary means of conflict resolution. But that would deprive police of their favorite escalation tools: tasers, tear gas, sound cannons and all the other kewl toyz they've gotten from teh military.

Right now, we have police forces that revel in escalating situations to show their collective bad-assery. And they scratch their unibrows in disbelief that the public doesn't approve. I definitely understand your point and fully agree that we need changes on the police-side. But adopting the attitude that police do not deserve respect will result in a lot of dead citizens and cops. There will be a transition.

while i do not condone some of the abusive things we have lately seen by police, what i do say is this:

imagine that every day you leave your house.....your wife and your kids....and you go out into the world where there exists evil......people who hate people.....people on drugs.....people out of their minds.....people who want to inflict pain.....every day, you encounter some of these people......yes, hopefully, 98% of the people you encounter are good, decent, nice people who respect your authority and cooperate.....but....you can't know who is who or which ones are which

and so, in order to have the best chance to return home to your wife and children each day......you HAVE TO BE hyper-vigilant......your life literally depends on it....and so....there is a brief moment of encounter....in which you only have a split second or maybe a few seconds at best.....in which to determine.....is this a good, decent, nice person who is going to be cooperative.....or is this someone high on meth who wants to kill me?

over time, you become more and more cautious.....you see more and more.....you suffer from PTSD from the people who have tried to kill you.....from the different things you have seen.....you ARE scared.....and you WANT TO LIVE.....and so you become more and more cautious and somewhat more aggressive.....

and that is how it happens.....and that is why sometimes police make bad judgements or bad decisions......because they want to live....they want to go home......and guess what.....tomorrow is just a repeat of today......over and over......

so....yes.....sometimes police use excessive force.....and other times they get spit on and cursed and talked to like animals.....for no reason.....and sometimes they go into a house where a crazed husband has beaten a wife within inches of her life ....and when they try to arrest the husband....the wife attacks them and tries to kill them.......

so.....don't put all of your eggs in the basket of what the news sensationalizes......consider for moment how your life might be if you were a policeman or woman.....a state trooper.....or any other form of law enforcement......
