why are colored people called colored?

I don't know what to call them. I just say "black." (Except for when i'm with a bunch a white guys and were telling racist jokes.)

tee hee. That's mostly true, but I know some ashy fellas... they're kinda gray. And I know some really dark guys... They describe themselves as blurple in color. I may be "white" by definition, but I'm usually some shade of pink
