Who / Whom ?

“Geology on paper, but sexual gymnastics in reality,” Stefan answered with a little laugh. He wasn’t helping keeping this discussion in a neutral channel.

Not used much use these days, but I think it's nice to know how it should be done.

Whom ?

While the Holy Mother Church has approved only one way it should be done (and even that approval was reluctantly accorded), we at Lit are conversant with numerous ways in which it can be... Oh! You meant the grammar issue, didn't you, HP? Sorry. It must have been the geologic referrent, the earth moved for me and all that Hemmingway stuff.

A delightful bit of didactic discourse, HP. Who should we thank or to whom should we give thanks?

Sorry, I never can understand the difference. I rewrite to get around it when possible. Frequently it's just affected use anyway and can efficiently just be dropped in the context of the sentence.

If it sounds wrong as in normal speech, I drop the M. None of my characters would be caught dead in a smoking jacket. Unless they were on fire anyway  :D

Sounds good. It's one of those distinctions that's going to become extinct anyway. Using "whom" in any sense is quickly becoming too high brow for the bulk of the buyers.

My 9th grade English teacher put it best:

"Who does something and Whom has something done to them."

So: I never knew who could post things like this but it was awesome.

And: My teacher told us that her husband, whom she loved dearly, was awfully ill and so we'd have a substitute teacher for the next few days.
