i have some lilac silk hanging around and i'm feeling creative. the classic, high waisted, french knickers look like a simple enough pattern to draw up.

anyone else tried their hand at this?
if it turns out ok i may post pics.

once. I got really bored rolling the hems though. I chopped up an old pair to use as a pattern.

which reminds me, I need to look at bras.

It's way easier to make crotchless panties. They're classy too. :)

I've made drawers with French bottoms. Do you need bedroom furniture?

ooooohhhh...

*tunes in*

you are my hero.
i've made dresses & parasols before but never knickers. apparently the women would make their own out of parachute silk :)
i had a roll of silk laying around which my mother had brought back for me from thailand. i'd used some for the parasol but had plenty left over. it seems daft not to give it a go.

my sewing skills are shoddy at best. it is something i want to improve one of these days. give it a go! i need to go fold butt loads of laundry now.

The pattern should be easy, the sewing part might be slippery on such delicate fabric. I would love to see your results.

like i say, i've made a parasol from this before
(well, re-covered it after the original, antique silk had disintegrated), so i'm used to working with it.

it's a matt silk rather than a silk satin, which makes things a whole lot easier.

So are you going with the buttons version or the elastic waist? The lilac will be lovely. Not enough left over to make a matching camisole?

I always admire people who can make clothes- I can't sew to save my life. The french knickers look so cute, I love retro underthings as well.

there's enough silk but, having huge jugs, it's a chore to get tops fitting just right. i'll have a think about that though. if i can find one that i like i might have a go at making it.

The perfect opportunity to fit the huge jugs, because it will be tailored just for you. Just put some darts in. Then we're really going to want to see your results. Wearing them of course!:D

darts?
with my tit to waist ratio, i'll be putting in javelins.

I have and recommend the following:

I may have some pdfs on drafting them.

make a muslin or mock up first to check fit, no point wasting silk.

prewash the silk if you are going to be washing it. If its not a shiny silk I wash it and dry or press it so it shrinks however... You can do a small test if you have enough fabric. I usually do 4 inch test swatches.

use a micro serrated shears or rotary cutter when cutting the silk. If you don't have either you can cut through tissue paper or starch the silk to make it easier to work with.

Use a new needle-universal, microfiber or denim point.

I use silk thread or 60 weight cotton embroidery thread in the sewing machine.

for the edges/hems you can use a serger/overlock machine and do a rolled hem or a narrow three thread. If you don't have that, a picot edge, rolled hem or very narrow hem folded, cut and stitched.

If you have any questions, feel free to pm me.
