I haven't played too much with the options, but mostly I just do something like

white shoes | bananas | van gogh

Early ones I left out the | s and just let it figure out which words should be associated with one another, I'm not sure how much difference it makes.

Suggesting an artist or style ("chiaroscuro", "watercolor pencil", "silk painting", "photorealistic" etc.) generally seems to give better-looking results, because otherwise it's doing some sort of average of styles that doesn't look so much like anything in particular. Things like "vibrant" or "neon" can be fun.

Sometimes it gets stuck on unexpected associations. I was trying to do one involving gin for a friend of mine, and it kept putting weird anime-looking faces in the pictures, because apparently there's an anime character of that name.
