That's true, and I'm not really a sci-fi movie fan.

I was about to say "hmm, I'm not sure the Matrix is sci-fi" but IMDb says the genres are "Action / Thriller / Sci-Fi" so color me wrong.

It's good for the special effects and the "look" though. All that shiny black vinyl, yum. It also has huge religious undertones...more info on that here. I believe it was actually banned in Egypt for being "too religious" which seems to be taking it a little too seriously, but it's definitely more than just sci-fi.

I still remember being in the theater in 1999, and it was so full my friend and I had to sit on the floor with our legs hanging over the balcony. It was awesome.
