Where you write.

I'm usually out on Friday nights playing pool, but our team has the bye this week and the wife works late so I'm a bit bored.

Being bored causes my mind to wander and it occurred to me that I always wonder what type of writing space people have here.

I'm sure some have offices, and others maybe simply pop open the lap top where ever they are in the house. Some people (not me) I'm sure are ocd organized and others a bit cluttered.

I thought it might be fun if people wanted to post a pic of their space or lap top, you know the place where the "magic" or depending on the muse, does or doesn't happen.

So here is a couple of pics of my set up.

I recently bought a new house so I have only been in this space a few months and am so superstitious I couldn't write shit my first month here (I then gave the muse my change of address and it found its way.)

My space is in the basement, because of course my wife got the very nice office upstairs for her use.

As you can see I am not totally cluttered, but not overly organized either. I have two monitors not just for the ease of editing or surfing while writing, but because my eyes aren't the greatest so the larger monitor is a must.

Over the pc are the covers of the few E-books I have tossed up on Smashwords so far and off to the left the stupid "girlie calender" My wife gave me for some reason. Next to that is a classic drawing of Catwoman licking milk from a bowl

I have two "mascots" the Raven on top of the monitor has a button that causes the wings to flap and it quotes three or four lines from Poe's The Raven.

Next to the PC is a vintage Mego Lizard action figure that I have had since I was 9. Keeping him was not easy as I was bouncing from home to home for awhile, and I remember having to actually fight for him in one place.

So at this point I have had him for thirty+ years and it has sentimental value to it. If you looked closely you would see that his right hand is missing. This injury is due to the near death experience he suffered when one of my German Shepard's got a hold of him as a puppy.

Also visible is my one addiction. I don't smoke, take pills, smoke dope and am a social drinker. My weakness however, is for wint o green Life savors and I go through about three bags a week. So on the plus side I never worry about my breath.

So anyone else want to share their space? And if so explain anything about such as why its your space or any good luck charms or odd little things you keep around it?

I'm a moblie laptop guy. I like the freedom to keep writing, no matter where I am around the house. Sometimes it just takes a different locale to get things going. Staying in one spot with my old PC had me feeling bored in my space. Looking at the same four walls and window did nothing for inspiration, but once I bought the laptop, it allowed me a constant change, so I could get in my zone easier.

Once I'm walking well enough, I'll jump on my Ebike and find WiFi locales and places to just plug in and charge.

I'm in one corner of the living room with a laptop, but sometimes move to the kitchen or family room for a change of scenery, or to futz while I'm watching a game or a movie. Sometimes I go to a fast food place or something to just get out of the house, but that's it.

Ditto, I'm on a college campus, so widespread wifi and a laptop means I can write wherever. Sometimes I write between taking notes in my human anatomy classes. Appropriate?

I got my own office, mostly filled with bazillions of books.

My lap top is pretty much a pc as it is mostly stationary. It's docked to the other monitor and wireless keyboard. I pretty much write at home or occasionally at work, but use my pc there. (I e-mail the docs that day and delete them from there)

When I go out I like to enjoy wherever I'm going and never take it with me.

my desk

Howdy,

Here is my space, which was cleaned up recently due to the mother-in-law visiting.

My custom PC case I built a few years ago, my dual 21 inch Samsung monitors, a couple eReaders I use, my coffee and my ice water :)

I built the oak desk about five years ago, nothing fancy but I call it home!

I do most of my writing in the slow times at work on a laptop.

There is a state park not far from my place that has screened in camp sites with electric right on the edge of the lake. Perfect place to write.

I also go to one of the local bars that has a deck built out over the lake. The owner keeps a certain corner table reserved for me most of the time. It has a plug in and a small light just for me. A beautiful view of the lake, cold beer and interesting people. What else do you need.

At home I have an office and a screened in back porch. The office works when it is cold or hot and the porch is perfect for early mornings in the hot part of the year and any time there is good weather.

So where do I write? I've got options. :)

That's a beautiful computer case. :rose:

I try to write in the office/nerd cave room. More often than not, its via email on the Blackberry on the bus during my commute.

I use the smallest 'bedroom' (better called a Box Room) as a shack and office. I have my Radio gear as well as a laptop and a tower PC with twin screens (I'm a keen Flight Sim user).

IT is not a tidy room!

This is my desk. When I get tired of the office, I use the laptop.

I agree about interesting people. Sometimes a story idea comes from just watching people as I sit and enjoy a drink or eat. Sometimes where I sit becomes the locale in my story. Inspiration comes from so many sources when you're out.

Way to neat for me! I'd have to clutter it up with some wrappers or something.

Nice space though.

LOL

Trust me, in a week or two it will have scratch paper everywhere, and lots of dust. (I live in the desert in California)

Laptop in the living room. I live alone so that's not as bad as it sounds. I'll have music playing, or something on TV that doesn't require much concentration to follow, like The Voice or American Idol, Project Runway, or The Face Off. Sometimes silence works best. I bought a wireless modem so that I can take the laptop outside this summer. My dog will love that!

I can't afford to be too picky

I did some writing in the car this past week, and in the camper. That would be ideal--in the camper surrounded by West Texas desert, no sounds but a pack of coyotes in the distance, and that strange whistling sound you hear in your head when the temp has reached hotter than fucking hell. Gimme that dry breeze, a cold iced tea, and my laptop, and I'm in heaven.

My laptop wherever I get internet service. I write most of my stuff on Google docs. When I don't have my computer, I'll write on my phone, but it's a pain so I try not to do it often.

Ninety percent of what I write is written in my office, on a wireless keyboard attached (or not attached, since it's wireless) to my laptop. But on a nice day - and there haven't been that many of those lately - I sometimes take the laptop out onto the terrace and work there. When this happens, I do tend to miss my keyboard and large screen monitor. :(

If I'm working in my office, I'm usually surrounded by a selection of reference books. I also have a compact but effective sound system with a couple of small speakers on the desk and sub woofer tucked under. If I'm working outside, I usually have my iPod docked into a pair of (surprisingly good) portable speakers.

It's not in the picture, but I have a bose sound dock on the next table for my I-pod that thing can make the room shake, and no static at all.

Bose makes a great product, but over priced. We made the displays for them and I got tow for free from the rep I was dealing with.
