Where is suspense in a sex story?

Let's face it, most stories, be they mystery, sci-fi or whatever, the hero wins. This is definitely the case in erotica as well :D So like most stories the suspense is in how the 'win' is accomplished. Most effectively hightened by temporary setbacks/wrong turns/losses on the way. Even teasing the reader with the possiblity the hero might not win. Sherlock Holmes and Jack Ryan wouldn't hold our interest if they solved the murder and prevented a war repectively in the first chapters. This is why there's so much bad erotica, the same guy that only lasts 2 minutes in real life also want's his writing to get to the 'good part' right away.

Some of the best stories keep you hanging to the last page. Anyone read Hellstrom's Hive by Frank Herbert?
