What are people's thoughts on using different languages or dialects in an English language story?
My specific example is that in Tagalog, we use 'Kuya' or 'Ate' as a sign of respect for elders - big brother and big sister, respectively. I'm thinking 'Ate' in an English language story might be problematic as, obviously the past tense of 'eat' is the same. I could drop it entirely, but I think it's important to the narrative. Would italicisation work?
Also, I'm really interested in how American readers feel when then see 'Arse' instead or 'Ass'!
