When is it okay to take in a stray kitty?

I've noticed that the people here have a big love for kitties and that's awesome! So I hope you can help me with this.

There is a very sweet kitty that I see some days in the backyard. He's clearly tame and loves to be petted and held. But I don't know if he's a true stray or just a "free-range" kitty. Maybe his owners just let him wander during the day. He seems well fed and well taken care of.

He doesn't have a collar though, but I know a lot of cats hate collars. He's not neutered either. I would love to take him in, but I don't want to end up stealing someone's kitty. What should I do?

If there's no collar, looks like you just got a free cat! Mozel.

Tie a note to his neck that says you will claim him unless the note is removed and replaced with a dollar bill.

I would snatch him up in an instant! He's so cute and sweet, not a typical tomcat at all! That's what makes me think he might belong to someone. I would take him to a shelter but I'm worried that he's not chipped and might be put down. :( But I'm also worried that if I just claim him, someone might be desperately looking him for him and they won't find him.

I say if he's fully grown, get him fixed and keep him.

What a moral dilemma.

Neci, are you saying I should lure him in with tequila and fajitas? :D

cut the balls. commit to surgery. love and care for. post a facebook notice that you have found a wonderful cat, and will be loving and caring for her as long as she chooses to stay with you. leave her free to roam the world. you are sanctuary.

Did you just name the stolen kitty or did you just break out some mis-spelled Yiddish?

If it is groomed and appears well-fed, chances are good it's a claimed kitty, no? I do like the 'tie a note around one of its appendages' idea to see if an owner responds.

Sorry it's not the same drama the GB is used to. No cheating spouses, no political crap, no weird offline backstabbing that requires reading 50 page threads to understand what's going on.

It's not exactly equivalent to stealing a horse but if you can live with a 4 year old girl crying herself to sleep every night because her kitty won't be coming home, by all means, steal it. You have my permission.

Misspelled Yiddish, for sure. I only know one Jewish person and he doesn't type how he talks so I'm on my own. :(

I think maybe I will do the note thing. :)

Oh, and he has a name. He's Holland Oats.

Blame the girl's parents for not getting the cat fixed. Assuming he's fully grown, and not just a kitten.

I don't know if he's fully grown, but he is not a kitten anymore. And while having dozens of little kittens infested in the neighborhood would be cute for a couple of days, it would not be fun when they all start starving. :)

That. Is. Awesome.

With a six thousand dollar bed under you is there any possible real to wake up?

I try to name things after the first song I hear on the radio and Maneater was not a nice name for such a sweet little kitty boy. :)

That's part of why I say take him to a vet and get him fixed, if he's old enough and not chipped. Male cats get into all kinds of trouble after they reach sexual maturity, including fights where they come home looking like shit even if they won the fight. They also have a tendency to wind up squashed on a street or road due to all the roaming. They settle down once they're neutered.
