When I Was a Kid....

WIWAK, we used to sit down for dinner, all 6 of us, the TV was turned OFF, and the phone didn't get answered.
And we ate casseroles. LOTS of Casseroles. Usually made with some kind of noodles ("pasta" wasn't invented then, lol), and a smidge of meat ( my mom could feed a family of 6 with a half pound of hamburger in a casserole), and some kind of canned, condensed soup.
And jello, usually made into some kind of weird fruit or veggie salad. Remember lime jello with pineapple and cottage cheese? We had that A LOT!
And iceberg lettuce salad, with Wishbone bottled dressing.
And we had a plate of white bread on the table and margarine ( usually Imperial) to spread on the bread.
And my mom made dessert almost every day...cake, pie, cookies, bars, something baked. It was very unusual to not have dessert.
And we all lived.

WIWAK, Oh, and my dad used to make awesome grilled cheese and Spam sandwiches. He used Velveeta cheese, which is still my "cheese" of choice for grilled cheese sandwiches. Ohh I know. Don't tell me..it's really not cheese....but nothing else melts like it. And once a year or so, I still get a craving for one of those Spam and cheese sandwiches like my dad made. So often, I'll call him, and we'll have one together.

When I was a kid, we never ate at McDonalds or Burger King. We ate out on rare occasion, but never at a place that could be labeled "fast food."

When I was a kid, every kind of ice cream or popsicle was a slice of heaven. Now, I'm much more selective.

When I was a kid we never went to a pool to swim. It was always to a nearby creek

Wiwak people drove around with hunting rifles on a rack in plain sight in the back window of their pick up.
Wiwak you could smoke on air planes. Braniff Airlines was still in business. You also got real knives and forks to eat your on board meal. Airlines used to give out decks of playing cards.
Wiwak I used to fall asleep every night listening to a transistor radio.

WIWAK, everything was about building a Fort. Lincoln Logs made great forts. When my mom would scream at me to go play outside, We'd figure out how to turn shrubs and trees into a fort. Storming the fort and defending the fort became the reason for life. Especially if you had to use water balloons for attack and defense.

WIWAK it seemed warmer; the furnace was running, fire in the fireplace, sweaters and thick blankets, dinner heating in the oven.

Now, I'm just cold, all the time :(

You had an oven..WIWAK we waited for the dead racoon to thaw out on the bonnet of dads car.
