When I Was a Kid....

WIWAK, I spent my Friday nights at football stadiums across South Georgia

WIWAK i spent most of one summer sneaking into the local drive in and watched Smoky and the Bandit so many times I lost count.

WIWAK the play at home version of NFL football consisted of a painted aluminum sheet that vibrated. The players were mounted on green square boxes and went in every direction but the one you wanted them to go. The football was an oval punched out of foam that disappeared when you kicked a field goal, and there was always one player stuck in the corner trying like hell but going no where.

Five minutes later we'd go outside and throw a real ball around.

WIWAK Milton Berle was a hot item and midget wrestling filled the frequent talent gaps on TV

WIWAK I could get completely rat arsed, still get it up and be fine the next morning.

WIWAK there were more jelly babies in a bag and you could get boxes of fruit gums in the shape of the fruit

When I was a kid, there was a blizzard that lasted for 6 weeks on the east coast of the US. We had to crawl out of the windows to dig out the doors, because the doors were blocked up.

I think it was after that blizzard, that building codes were made that doors have to open inwards. (not in effect in the south, where building codes are reversed, because hurricanes are storms of low pressure, and if the doors don't blow out to release the high pressure inside, a house could explode).

When I was a kid, we had these really high tech TV remote controls, called "Kinetic Interactive Devices." However those remotes were only good until about 8PM, after which you had to put them in their Battery Expansion Devices. After about 8 hours recharging, they were good to go again.

When I was a kid...

I had an "Aunt" Rashelle that said "Mhm?" Found out eventually that was short for "If you don't got nothing nice to say..." Mhm?

Because she had 5 kids, the rest of the neighborhood (Congress Park Apartments) talked about "Welfare" but honestly, she managed to support 5 kids without a man by baby sitting half the neighborhood.

Also, she was frugal. She could pinch a penny, and rub it until it turned into a dime. For her next trick, she'd show you how to make 10 sandwitches out of 1 slice of Velveta. (Or whatever. Any single individually wrapped slice was "Velveta" and all diapers were "Pampers." Also, she was everyone's "Aunt.")

When I was a kid the skating rink, Jordache, and Jolly Rancher sticks for 10¢ was a good Saturday night! (Probably still would be)

When I was a kid, (although at 29, I'm often accused of STILL being a kid) children's TV used to be good!

WIWAK you rode your bike 5 miles to visit your friends. You called and they actually answered. If you wanted to see each other you visited you didn't FaceTime or Skype.

I went anywhere I wanted, road my bike everywhere and no worries of anyone or any harm coming to me.
