Jessica Matthews stopped the car in front of the old rundown looking bookstore her friend had told her about. She groaned as the car sputtered threatening to die again on her,she had not had a very good week and now her car was going. Her fiancee had finally told her about cheating with a stripper 2 days earlier and left her. It wouldn't have been so bad but the wedding was the following weekend. She had to call an uninvite everyone telling them why and sending back all the bridal gifts. She just wanted to curl up with a tub of Ben and Jerry's ice cream and read a good book. She turned the car off and slid from the car, walking slowly into the store.
The atmosphere was dusty and relaxed, somehow she didnt think it got much business with the new strip mall a mile away. She gave the old woman behind the counter a small smile as she moved along the rows of book. There were shelves over-flowing,books stacked on the floor and tables, she suddenly felt very comfortable here. The old woman moved to her side and smiled at her, wrinkles circled her mouth from age. Jessica returned her smile without thinking, lifting an old book from the shelf. "Are you looking for anything in particular? The woman asked her in a soft motherly voice. She held several books in her arms as she stood there next to Jessica.
Jessica shrugged her shoulders as she replaced the book she had looked at,then turned to the woman. "I'm not sure, its one of those bad days where I just want to crawl under the bed."She said suddenly wondering where that reply had come from. Frwoning she turned away, not wanting a stranger to know her bad week. The soft laugh met her ears making her look over her shoulder at the woman."He broke your heart, did he?"She tsked and shook her head as she sat the books she held down. "Men dont know how good a woman they have until they are gone."She continued as she began looking across the shelves. She let out a whoop when she foound what she wa looking for.
"here, sweetie. Take this one. Its a romance but one from the heart."The woman said as she handed the ragged looking book to Jessica. Jessica took the book,it looked like any romance book. It was a Highlander book called Highland Warrior. She looked over at the woman, whos eyes sparkled as she watched Jessica."True love is beyond time or place."The woman said as she walked back to the counter humming softly.Jessica followed her and pulled out her checkbook. "No,no charge. You look like you need a good read and rest. take it and enjoy."The wooman said smiling and shaking her head at her offer to pay.
Jessica took the ook and gave the woman a smile as she left the store, climbing into her car she turned the key,and nothing happened. Jessica groaned and dropped her head onto the steering wheell after several atempts to start it failed.Jessica slid from the car and walked back into the store, looking around she didnt see the old woman. A young girl came from between the rows. "Can I help you?"She asked like she was bored. Jessica looked aorund once more before looking at the girl."Umm..the woman that I was just talking too..Is she still here."She asked the girl.
The girl gave her a surprised look and shook her head."umm..I'm the only one working here today. There sint noone else."She answered giving Jessica a look that said she was crazy. Jessica blinked and looked down at the book still in her hand then around the store. "No,she just gave me this book, not more than 10 minutes ago."The girl stepped away from Jessica as if she was going to go postal on her."Look,Lady..Im the only one here and it is closing time."She said letting Jessica know it was time to go.
Jessica left the store, confused. Was she losing it,was she that depressed? She slid once more inside of her car and gave a silent prayer before turning the key,it sputtered to a start. Putting the car in gear she headed home to the waiitng ice cream and book sitting beside her.She pulled into her driveway 20 minutes later and hurried into her small house. It wasnt much but it was hers. She kicked the door closed and tossed her purse on the couch. She hurried into the bathroom and changed into her nightgown. The ice cream in hand she curled up on her bed and opened the book.(Continued next post)
