Just curious. What's your favorite category to write/read and why?

Mine is the gay male category. I think it presents a special challenge for me as a female to write simply because I have limited frame of reference. Sure I have a boyfriend and I've been with men, but I don't have man parts. I can never truly know what sexual experiences are like from a male point of view. Reading/writing such a story satisfies a curiosity for the same reason. I can never know that experience therefore I'm naturally curious about it. Therein lies a certain amount of mystery and excitement. For some reason that gets me hot. ;) Lol Anyone else have similar views?

Here, under this name? Gay male, because that's mainly what this posting name is used for. And I write GM as a relief from the mainstream genres I write.

For me its incest.

To me its the ultimate taboo.

Most any other fantasy here (short of non human) can be experienced. Group sex, any fetish, gay, lesbian, cross dressing etc...

If you really want to try it you can.

Incest however, except for some isolated incidents is that line that is never really crossed. So its the ultimate "breaking of the rules"

That's why I find it exciting to both read and write about.

I'll add, that for me, the kink is incest romance. Stroke stories about "sis was hot so why not" are not my thing.

I think the forbidden love between siblings is a bigger turn on than the sex.

Good question

As a newbie publisher here with only 10 submissions so far, I would say Erotic Couplings is my favorite because it is so general. I have written a number of MMF threesome stories and would have thought of putting them in Loving Wives until my eyes were opened in a dramatic way to the turf war going on in LW. Oh man, there are some folks with strong and very differing opinions about what is suitable content in that category. I tried my hand at one lesbian sex story and it has been pretty well received as well as one Sci-Fi story that people seem to like. I think it is a fun challenge to reach out beyond my personal turn-ons and try to write something worthwhile from the perspective of others with very different turn-ons than my own.

Anyway, as of now it would be Erotic Couplings.

To read gay male and femdom and to write...well since nearly all of my stories get recorded it would be Text with Audio. My biggest pet peeve is that all stories have to be lumped into that category when they are audio...wish you could cross reference and post to two topics when it was audio but alas you cannot so there you have it.

Mind Control

To have power over one's mind to be able to make others do things is a kick for me. Yes, it screams that I am in a situation where I don't have any power or control. Still, if I had the power to severely manipulate someone in all aspects of life, that would be a huge turn on for me.

Non Consent/Reluctance, and Incest, Mature and Humor, but I have a Loving Wives and a Sci Fi almost finished that I plan to post ere long.

Sci-fi/fantasy. There's a practical angle here when it comes to erotica: by and large, *everyone* in an erotic story is really attractive, and *everyone* performs with exciting sexuality, and often with exceptional stamina. I like to have a premise that establishes at least some explanation for this so the issue of suspension if disbelief is out of the way.

Past that... I just enjoy the ridiculous stuff. I like brawls and explosions and car fights and gun chases. :) I enjoy wild concepts and people put in extraordinary situations. I've written only one story in which nobody is shot or stabbed or blown up, and in that one there was a patently ridiculous amount of sex. I come here for fantasy--even when it doesn't involve aliens or magic or whatever.

And I like a good deal of humor. I've been told that humor and erotica don't mix, because in order to get really turned on you have to kinda turn your brain off. I disagree with this. I tend not to try to make my actual sexual situations humorous, but any amount of context leading into it can be silly and it works just fine. Ladies, just remember--it's okay to laugh during sex. It's also okay to point. It is NEVER OKAY TO POINT AND LAUGH DURING SEX.

I'm not sure I really have a favourite category as such. The ones I never read are:

BDSM - Just not my thing
Gay Male - Not gay, or curious. Don't mind reading the stories, but they don't turn me on.
Loving Wives - A bit of an odd category
Non English - For the obvious reason
Non Erotic - I have a bookshelf full of that
Romance - I just find it bland and uninteresting
Transsexual/CD - Again, just not my thing

I think every other category I pop into from time to time, depending on mood and what I haven't read for a while.

For reading, I would say Group Sex, Non-con/Reluctance, and Loving Wives. For writing, well, I don't really write to a specific category. I just write what's in my head, and when I'm ready to upload it I try to figure which category is the best fit. My last three have been in Fetish, Romance, and NonCon.

Incest/Taboo- because it gets the most number of votes and views. For some reason this category is the most popular among readers.

I mainly read by author not by category.

Right now I am in the middle of a bet with another author whether a straight guy can write a good Gay Male story or not. She said "no", I'm trying to prove her wrong (though not very successfully so far).

About the Gay Male category, one appealing fact is that most of the readers are middle aged women, so you don't run the risk of being vote-bombed, flamed and trolled. Loving Wives on the other hand... (you'll see).

I write the story and then worry about the cat.

As for my favorite and why, that would be BDSM and some say I have a knack for it. My best scoring and most read stories are in that cat but then again I shotgun the categories for the most part.

I tend to read romance, nonhuman, sf, although I'll check out a wider range if the titles/taglines look intriguing. I generally avoid non-con and BDSM, although I'll read those, too, occasionally.

I tend to write romance and nonhuman.

I don't mind but can't quite understand the straight female attraction to gay male stories. I mean it's fine, I've read some good stories, I've read some articles that attempt to explain it. The one thing I've always wondered is whether a gay male story written by a straight woman is at all realistic or accurate in terms of gay male relationships.

My former editor at my now-defunct publisher once told me to write a gay male story. I said I didn't think I could. She said it's easy, just write them as women and then change the names. So that would be one person's take on how it works. Not mine! Just sayin'.

And now I've probably derailed the thread into a defense of GM stories written by straight women. Sorry.

Lol That's part of the appeal for me. The challenge of writing it. The challenge of trying to make it realistic.

I am overwhelmed by the amount of positive feedback I received in just two days time on my approved submissions in the gay male category. Even the worst comment was filled with very helpful constructive criticism. I had no idea I'd get this kind of response. It's got me thinking about doing a sequel to the series after the next and final part is approved. People have gotten caught up in the story and want to know more about the world and characters I created. My mind is blown. Some nice folks in that category for sure. lol

Reading: Obviously I enjoy the SF/Fantasy category, but I don't read as much of it as I maybe should. But I really enjoy the escapism the category provides.

I think there's something really compelling about any story that gets into the headspace of a woman when she's deciding to have sex with someone for the first time... I love a well-written smut scene, I really like having some context and some dialogue to tell me what the characters are like, but I think that whole "am I going to do this?" and the internal conflict with temptation/doubt/pleasure is really great.

With that in mind, I can generally find stuff I like in EC, Group Sex and Lesbian. (The Mature category is fun for me as long as it's an older woman/younger man situation... something about the reverse tends to turn me off.) I sometimes poke around in the Loving Wives category, but... honestly, my biggest problem with that is that the stories often involve the women being treated poorly, regardless of the context of the sex itself. I don't want to read about a shitty, jackass guy getting laid; it's one thing if he's confident or whatever, but when he does shitty stuff just to show he's in control, I get immediately turned off. I also really prefer happy endings; I don't come to Literotica to see someone's life/marriage/self-esteem get shattered. There are several stories in LW I would absolutely love if it weren't for the fact that I can't stand at least one male character.

I have enjoyed a couple things in the Mind Control category, but I can't let myself analyze it too far. The idea behind mind control (if we're talking like superpowers or whatever) just seems profoundly lonely to me.

Definitely the Sci-Fi/Fantasy category, with an emphasis on Fantasy. As the name suggests, I'm a real mythology buff and I love drawing on classic mythology and folklore as a basis for my stories.

In particular, I like working with nymphs (sexiest babes imaginable, who are always up for a little action) and genies (exotic middle-eastern beauties who are obsessed with pleasing their master, not to mention those erotic harem outfits!:p) Not surprisingly, I couldn't resist the urge to cross-breed these two creatures in a story once...

I write the story and then worry about the cat.
I can sympathize. I lost a parakeet once because I got into "the zone" while writing a story and forgot to feed him for four days... :(:rose:.

But how do you know if you have? Have any gay men you know commented on it? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I'd actually be curious. Most men I know, of any orientation, aren't much on reading romances.

Since they say "write what you know" BDSM is my home category for reading and (gradually working up to) writing.

Yeah, but they said that before the era of google.

Not only that, but let's face it: if writers held to "write what you know," there'd be a lot less material out there to read, and far less creativity.

I write what I know in the margins and in the small sense. I give characters jobs that I've had in the past when their job isn't that important to the story. I know what it's like to own a motorcycle, so I use that. But those are small things.

I have never been in a gunfight. I know I don't ever want to be in one. But I write them all the time. It's a great fantasy, but as long as it's a fantasy nobody actually gets hurt.

I've never been in bed with more than one woman at a time. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'd actually want to do that, either. Much like the fantasy gunfight, it looks pretty awesome, but when faced with the reality of it I'd be too concerned that at least one person would go home with their feelings hurt somehow.

I think the stuff I have written here that I liked best ended up either in Sci-fi and Fantasy, Fetish, or Romance. So, those are probably the categories I like best, you could assume.

I agree... its my favorite too, although I don't write about sisters ever... Cousins, aunts, thats all ok for me... sisters isn't. I don't know why, maybe because I have 2 and no brothers.
