Your kid is graduated high school, so what next?

My oldest grandson enlisted in the Air Force, plans to cross-train to something better once he more time in. For now he fuels jets.

The oldest grand-daughter is a junior in college.

The next-oldest grand-daughter starts college in August. Plans to be a pharmacist.

The next oldest grandson graduated high school plans to enlist in the military.

I suggested to my high school and older grandkids that they forget about any vocation there is no demand for, and then suggested pharmacy, dental school, plumbing, welding, refrigeration, auto mechanics, and family medicine. Plus the military.

Forget law and social work and psychology and nursing and computer work and accounting.

One decided to go for pharmacy rather than nursing, one joined the air force, and one is thinking about the military, and one is in college for who in hell knows what...she talked about med school.

nice nice. what about sports, they never liked nor watched it?

I don't have kids but if I did I would steer them towards working for themselves and owning their own business entities.

I honestly believe that college is actually for a small number of people. Followers generally.

Be a leader I guess. Followers are just also rans and redundant.

I told mine to stay in college for as long as he could stand it. He has earned a masters.

I told him to major in something which will lead to a professional designation. He has his CPA and does audits (not taxes).

I told him to take what I taught him about houses and to look into investment real estate. He has his eye on his first property.

I have no idea why he listened to me, but he seems to trust me and is making the most of it.

Just hand them a shovel and have them dig some holes. If they don't like it, then college becomes attractive.

If I had it to do over again I wouldn't go near a college unless I planned to be a medical doctor.

For the most part I knew fine men in the construction industry, and despicable girly boys at the university and in government.

I recommend a couple of tours of Northern Ireland with the British Army.

I would be pointing them away from the military.
Medical careers are good, construction is ok but can involve being away from family for extended periods, and its the first industry to tank in a recession.

With a two year degree from a Community College, you can become a Corrections Officer.

It pays really good, but your chances of getting stabbed and killed are quite high.

Then again, just going to college can get you shot and killed.

Or even attending a movie theater for that matter.

I have steered my boys (gently) toward the military. But not active combat roles.... here you actually do get a choice when you enlist. I have suggested things like avionics, any of the trades like mechanical engineering, and computers.
My daughter is looking to become a teacher to fit in with being a parent.

Listen, I have asked you plenty of times.

Would you please get your ass out of my face?

Thank you...

I suggest the 'blue collar' type vocations. Electrician, HVAC, Plumbing. Those are good paying jobs and there is and will be for a long time yet plenty of demand for them. Mechanic is good, but is pretty specialized these days and requires a pretty expensive lay-out of tools. Specialized trades like Heavy Equipment operator, Operating Engineers and the like pay good as well but can be more difficult to get into and are sometimes seasonal as well like most construction trades. Of course, if their grades are good enough and and they are inclined that way, Lawyers and Doctors will always be in demand as well. Military doesn't offer many civilian occupations these days. Not like you can work on military planes and go right into the civilian field.
