You smuggle drugs to a dictatorship, you get caught. You're fucked. Why do you think you deserve special treatment to get you out of a situation you and you alone are responsible for being in?.

did she actually smuggle hashish oil into russia in vape cartridges? maybe. if so, she's stupid to take the risk even if it's not illegal in much of America.

however, even if she did, it's far from rare for russia/other countries to send convicted individuals back to their own countries via backdoor diplomatic channels in return for something.

it's not unusual for American nationals to want to come home and possibly serve time in their own country; she's just another bargaining chip for putin against America's stance over Ukraine and accusations of political interference.

Even if one takes what the Russian government says about an American celebrity at face value, which I certainly don't, vape cartridges with CBD oil is hardly "smuggling drugs."

If you are an American (or any other nationality for that matter, visiting a foreign country, you are subject to the laws of that country- PERIOD. That means, for example, if you visit an Islamic country, you are subject to Sharia law (and whatever that may entail.) If for whatever reason you decide to visit Iran (and I certainly wouldn't recommend doing so, though judging by some of the posts I read here, some of you would probably enjoy the "Freedoms" they have there.) you can be thrown in jail for possessing a Christian bible, or even discussing your religion with a native. If you visit some Asian countries, you can be fined or jailed for chewing gum or spitting on the sidewalk. Most foreign countries, including Canada, have much stricter gun laws than the U.S.

Basically, as a traveller, it means you may have to do some research before visiting to know the local laws and customs of where you are going, and what you can and cannot do there. Sounds like Miss Griner failed to do this, which is unfortunate for her.

Injustice is injustice. Siding with oppressors because victims acted poorly is not a proper way to deal with draconian drug laws or any other injustice. Did every civil rights demonstrator who went to jail deserve it? Did every pot smoker who went to prison for a joint deserve it? People should stand up for what's right and not cheer and make excuses for what's wrong.

Agreed; we should. However we should also focus on the injustices in our own back yard, right here in our own country, rather than worrying about what other countries are doing. Or at least, pick our battles; there are plenty of things that Russia is doing right now that are far worse than just having draconian drug laws.

That is why most of us are trying to change draconian and unjust laws being enacted here in America. I say "most of us" because some (including a few on this very forum) are actually working AGAINST that principle and seem to WANT more draconian laws (all the while, with perhaps intentional irony, going on about "Freedom.")

So we should have ignored the war crimes of the Nazis because of civil rights abuses in the U.S.? We can walk and chew gum at the same time. Saudi Arabia is currently committing war crimes in Yemen. So we should ignore the very serious human rights violations of SA women because bombing civilians and hospitals in Yemen is worse?

Injustice anywhere in the world affects all of us. Exploited labor in third world nations affects and depresses American wages. Environmental pollution in foreign nations affects air and water quality the world over. Drug prohibition creates and sustains international criminal organizations. Pretending like that's their problem and has no effect on us is naive.

I think we are basically on the same page. It's a question of just picking your battles, so to speak.

The American right doesn't care.

"I'm fine with an American citizen being mistreated by a dictatorship, if that American also has political opinions I disagree with" seems to be a widespread view out there — more proof that Trump has irrevocably broken the brains of millions of people.

Good Americans used to love drug mules.

What happened?

Trump Mind Control trickery.

^^^ I'm fine with people being prosecuted for crimes they commit, regardless of who or where they are, or what they believe.

Now, if the punishment exceeds the crime, that's something for the UN to deal with. Asking the leader of your own country to bail you out of your own shit pot because you bounce a ball is a whole different thing.

Does anyone remember the story of the Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver? He hated America and after an attempted killing of police officers, he fled to communist countries to avoid prosecution. He was indoctrinated into thinking those communist systems were superior to the United States. In the 70s he surrendered and came back to the US to face justice, saying he'd rather be in prison in the US than living under any communist system. Later in life he completely reversed himself and became a reformed pro-American patriot. Griner may learn the same lesson.

Drug prohibition is a human rights issue. Taking away a person's freedom to live in cage like an animal for marijuana? That's completely fucking insane! It's especially evil and hypocritical considering Russia is a country with one of the worst legal drug problems on the planet. It's a nation of drunks high on vodka 24/7.

Would you feel an American woman got what they deserved if they were jailed in Saudi Arabia for reading a bible or driving a car? Fucked up laws that violate human rights should not be apologized for. Americans should stand for freedom and justice around the world. Not capitulate and cheer on despotic dictators who have codified their human rights violations into law.

Alcohol consumption in Russia remains among the highest in the world. According to a 2011 report by the World Health Organization, annual per capita consumption of alcohol in Russia was about 15.76 litres, the fourth-highest volume in Europe.[1] It dropped to 11.7 litres in 2016,[2] and amounted to less than 10 litres as of 2019.[citation needed] Another dangerous trait of Russian alcohol consumption pattern was the high volume of spirits compared with other alcoholic drinks (such as beer or red wine).[3]

15.76 Litres is Happy Hour for luk.

I drank with a russian trawler skipper and crew one time in the galley….and another time with a jap container ship captain on the bridge. And Honda engineers in Vegas, who drink way more than GM engineers in Detroit.

Ph.d’s…..Pretty heavy drinkers.
