what's the stupidest comment you've ever received on a story?

RetroFan: it's not your job to figure that out if Anonymous can write it, then he should. Those who can write, those who can't...

I deleted a lot of comments from my stories, and now wish that I hadn't. There were a few that I felt took away from the experience of reading and enjoying the story, so I got rid of them. In retrospect, I realize the comments section of my stories isn't a part of my writing. It is a separate entity entirely.

Some of the comments I deleted were clearly trollish, and other readers leapt to respond before I got rid of those. I have to wonder now if I should have left it alone, to allow the readers to interact through their comments.

Memorably, there was an anonymous commenter who was the first to respond to my story It Had to Be Done. This was a mother/son incest story where they are isolated in a winter storm. He asked why I hadn't included piss-play in my story. Several other readers responded to that before I did, thanking me for not including that element in my story. I deleted the original comment, but then that anonymous commenter came back twice more arguing for "watersports" in my stories.

I deleted all of his comments, and broke my own rule against commenting on my own stories to reply to his continued comments. I felt that he was turning the comments section of my story into a forum for him to discuss his love of that fetish. Now, I think I should have just left it alone.

Likewise, some of the "You're an asshole and I'm going to one-vote your story every day until you move this to another category" comments I immediately trashed. I regret doing so now. It was a knee-jerk reaction on my part. Not only did it leave me without some gems to quote for you here, but I can't say those readers were entirely wrong. Perhaps some of my stories would have been more appropriate in another category. If I had let the comments stand, I could have allowed the readers to discuss it in those comments and that could have been productive.

I had expected to use reader feedback to guide me when I was writing my first series. Now, I feel that the comments section of a story is a separate forum for the readers. While I will still read every comment, I have to remember NOT to delete even the most inflammatory of them. It isn't my job to do so.

I'm honestly not sure if this person is trolling, or if I've triggered some poor soul who survived a particularly bitter divorce and jumped to the comment section after reading three paragraphs.

I suspect the latter. Some readers have Very Strong Opinions about ex-wives.

the stupidest comment ever: "It is clear from your writing that you are a communist.'

the stupidest comment ever: "It is clear from your writing that you are a communist.'

"I hope you stood the running dog imperialist oppressor of the masses who made that bourgeoisie comment against the wall, comrade."
