What's the longest you've held on to a PM?

That was supposed to self-destruct after the first 500 readings!

But only because I got into a mood and deleted the other ones.

I have some from August, 2001. I'd forgoten about the exchange untill this thread promted me to go look. It is kind of interesting from an historical perspective.

I have 8 month old PMs that I still plan on answering. Someday.

I'm so neurotic about PMs it's really pathetic.

I had to move many to the hard drive. I think the oldest one I have there is from mid June.

This might sound cynical, but I delete PMs as soon as I answer them, because invariably, 6 months in the future, when that person has stopped talking to me for whatever reason, a kept PM only hurts my feelings. Keeping PMs only allows me to pretend that I have friends.

I'm sorry I suck so badly as a friend, Johnny.

You just caught me at a bad time, that's all.

Didn't mean you, and I'm sorry if I gave that impression. I've been here a week today, I think. I don't expect that I've won any lifelong friends in 7 days. I took your PMs in the spirit of a 'welcome aboard', and appreciated them a whole lot. We don't know each other well enough for you to owe me an apology. I do think I know you well enough to hope that the bad times resolve themselves for you soon.

I get sentimental over some PM's and can't bear to delete them.

The oldest I have is from 12/26/01.

Rubes, did my latest PM get to you? :D

Mine is from the first week I joined Lit.

I usually clean them out pretty quickly. They seem to cease to be relevant after much time elapses.

September of 2001

It was a military joke from Dessert Amazon, still cracks me up everytime I read it.

Damn it, you beat me!

I still have one dated 11/17/01 from an exchange with Siren.

That's cheating.

I'm talking about deleting, gone, poof.

Like it never happened.

maybe 2 weeks? if that? and then I erased it by accident. I got that stupid full box thing and erased everything. And then I remembered I needed to save that, but just hadn't transferred it yet. oh well.

I got it again.

I am not a saver, I'm a deleter.

I still have my very first PM from a wonderful Lit member, that has since disappeared. So, that would be over a year now. I have a few saved that are at least 10 months old. I'm sentimental that way.:D

You and I have talked about how we wish we would have kept our first ones to each other. I remember almost exactly what it said. But still, it would have been sweet to have it.

Now to answer the thread....I don't keep many in the pm box for sentimental reasons. If I do keep them, they are cut and pasted into my email. I have one person who shows up very sporadically, and we "chat" exclusively through pm's. I've kept most of his and this started a year ago this month.
