What's "Spotlight" Mean?

Sorry for the possibly stupid question, but what's the meaning of "Spotlight"? I see a bunch of threads saying "Spotlight On 'So and So'" and I'm wondering what it is exactly. Do you win something if you're the spotlight? Are you supposed to entertain if you do?

I kid, of course, but I really am wondering what it means...

Yes, I understand what it is per se, I've read them, even asked my own questions... but what I mean to ask is: How does one become "spotlighted" (if such a word exists) and what's the purpose of it? To get to know the person better? To just have fun and ask silly question.

I might be slow in catching on on what "spotlight" actually represents, I just think it's a quirky idea... good one, nonetheless...

You get spotlighted by sucking up the person who's currently in the spotlight, because they decide where it's being pointed next. The purpose is both of those you mentioned, but also to ask embarrassing questions and see where the person draws their line.

dude, how carefully did you read that post? there's a reason i linked to it, b/c the third point of such threads is:

whatever disagreements we may have with forumites, the spotlight thread is not a place for mockery. people may choose to share what they like, with the understanding that such sharing ought not to be ammunition for abuse.

How about taking it easy a bit . It wasn't an attack, just a simple question. I didn't quite understand the whole shabang and the way it seemed to be presented was that people wanted to be center of attention. I see its purpose now and understand the fun of it.
