Fail

I should have been boiling potatoes for a simple meal.

Put the wrong ring on and heated up small pan of oil in error.

Smoke everywhere, flames jumping out of the pot and a horrible smell that will not go away.

Thank goodness for his quick actions with a wet tea towel.

Still at least I know the smoke alarm works.

I am an idiot sometimes:rolleyes:

Last night was a zucchini blossom, chanterelles mushroom, and garlic blossom frittata, topped with herb feta cheese. I still can't grasp how he throws stuff in a pan and it comes out so yummy.

I need to cook for my in-laws, who are really picky eaters. I've been stressing out because of this for ages now, and today's the day, and I still have no idea what I could cook that would both keep them happy and be tasty as well.

I'm starting to believe I'll grab a couple of Big Mac meals for them, at least they'll eat that. I don't like picky eaters. :(

At least the dessert's easy. It's going to be cheesecake, but I'll call it by some other name, because they "don't like cheesecakes", even if they've never tried it. But noooo, cheese and cake don't mesh in their world. Actually they've been eating cheesecake for years now, they just don't know it. We give the cake another, fancy name that has nothing to do with cheese and they're good to go.

I always feel like I'm tricking kids into eating spinach or something when I cook for them.

Sounds delicious :)

That made me laugh.

my mother has been hiding onions in my dads food for years. He doesn't like onions, but when she leaves them out he says it lacks 'something'

Haha, I'd love to see her tell him what's lacking. :D

The cheesecake was a success, again. My mother-in-law (well, we're not married, but still...) praised the cake all the time while eating it. Then, when they were leaving, she even turned around in the hallway just to say, once again, how good the cake was and how I should give her the recipe. Errr... Not likely to happen. :)

What else did you end up cooking?

I made meatballs and mashed potatoes. I also chopped up cucumber, tomatoes, bell peppers and melon, had 3 different kinds of lettuce leaves, roasted pine nuts and a dressing, so that they could take what they wanted to make a salad. (Guess what they took!) And made very sure there was nothing else than potatoes in the mash. I also ended up making two batches of meatballs, a plain one with basically nothing but ground beef, egg and a touch of salt for them and a tasty one for us.

A while back they wanted to take us and their other two sons (18 and 25) out for lunch. We went to a tex-mex sort of place, and the four of them ordered a burger with fries. With nothing on it. All of them even asked to remove the cheese! My chicken quesadilla was an object of great wonder to them.

Every time I eat with them I'm amazed that my boyfriend didn't grow up a picky eater.

mmm my parents are like that. Very plain eaters, and they like what they like. I think it's a country thing. THey won't let me cook for them, because they're scared of the 'fancy stuff' I make!

Breakfast in bed

Breakfast in bed prepared by DD2. She's not allowed to use the stove so it's almost toast with very thick margarine ( not so good at spreading yet) strawberries and M&M cookies left over from yesterday. "so mom, if you're not going to eat all of those, can I have some?" I'll give you one guess which menu item she was referring to.
Oh, and she also says "It was so nice to do this without my sister here because I got to do it all instead of just the stinking menu!"
Such a sweet child. I am blessed.

Yeah, they don't like me cooking too much, either. They, too, are from a really small town, now they live in a bit larger really small town. I get it that they haven't been exposed to many things and that's a big part of why they're uncomfortable with a lot of food items, but it's still annoying. I don't like cooking for picky eaters, too much hassle.

Last night:

Pan-fried beef tenderloins served with Béarnaise sauce, ratatouille, and garlic mashed red potatoes. With Montes Purple Angel, followed by fresh peach tart topped by vanilla gelato.

Tonight: White wine, Brie and crackers; blue cheese and bacon cheeseburgers, spring veggies salad, Sam Adams Boston Lager, and the last of the peach tart and gelato.

Beef arm roast, carrots and potatoes from the crock pot. I'll probably throw out some flat breads and garlic butter, or do garlic toast.
Chocolate ice cream for dessert.

Let's see...tonight it was

1. Herbed pot roast with baby potatoes, wild mushrooms, onions, carrots, celery & beets

2. Chicken Cacciatore

3. Spinach, mushroom & onion quiche (for 2 floors...)

I really don't know what came over me....

Feeding a crowd?

Hell yeah....

my mom (74) lives with me,
my guy lives on the floor above,
and his autistic older brother lives in the adjoining apartment.

Might as well cook for the whole commune!

(that, and I start commuting to work tomorrow, and my fully-capable mother pretty much refuses to cook for herself, so I'm making it as easy on myself as possible, since I won't be getting home until 6:30)

That's very nice of you!
I need to get better at menu planning so I can have all my prep work done over the weekend.
