What's cookin', good lookin'? Part II

Obviously I didn't cook myself, but here's my birthday dinner in pictures.

Savory
Sweet

Everything was so good, but my favorites were the cabbage broth, black radish, cod and sea buckthorn.

Awesome, seela!!
In case you were on the fence, I think you should definitely keep J :p
Happy birthday! :)

So we always have ramen in the house as part of our emergency provisions. Not good ramen, college food ramen. Some of it is pushing it's 'use by date' so I've been working with it a lot the last couple days.

The pic is chicken ramen, with left over chicken tenders, sprinkled with green onion and drizzled with honey mustard.

I did similar the other day (and really wish I'd thought to snap a pic) with beef. Beef ramen, thin sliced left over steak, sprinled with parsley and drizzled with horseradish.

Then last night I used beef ramen as a base for beef stroganoff. It was fantastic!

That looks good! I'm going to have to get some soup/broth consumption in myself, as soon it will be too hot :(
*sigh*

Two part question: what's the consensus on sous-vide cooking, and has anyone used home-level sous-vide equipment?

I bought a giant head of cauliflower. (o_o) It's huge. It doesn't fit in the vegetable drawer so it's sitting next to my mugicha pitcher and seems to be bigger.

I decided it's so big it should be a full meal, or at least the main dish. :) I'm going to make a low carb casserole (wasn't looking for low carb it just happened to be the recipe that sounded best) with leftover chicken and green enchilada sauce.

I've had steak prepared by sous-vide and it was excellent. What kinds of foods have you done this way?

Just meats. Iris did egg yolks (I still miss Iris, particularly in this thread!) but I never got around to that yet. Amazon has some very decently priced home equipment, that's where I got mine. I love it because I like my steak medium rare. Sous vide gives you a more uniformly cooked steak, instead of a steak that graduates from well cooked exterior to however you like the middle. Also, it's perfect every time because you set the temperature. But you already know this stuff if you have tried it :) I think I spent about $125 on mine and have never regretted it. I say get it!

I think about Iris often.

I think I'm not out of bounds if I say she's happy and healthy, just busy with life and that lead to her falling out of the habit of coming here. Maybe she'll return one day.

Her cooking is as excellent IRL as it is when she describes it here. :)

I'm gonna make something with cabbage and apples today, because I need to use up some. J said he'd like to have sausage with it, so I guess that's what we're having.

Because how can you say no to any of his whims after that fabulous meal? :D

Yes, and what's more important, his request means I don't have to think about what to cook. :p

It turned out really good. Red cabbage and apple, onion, garlic, apple cider, honey and rosemary, kind of stew-y. Worked well with the bratwurst J got us.
