What will be the GOP's message in the 2026 midterms?

Litsters know the importance of stories. In politics, the winners are the better storytellers with better stories.

What will the Pubs point to as an accomplishment? How will they say, "You should leave us in control like we are now"?

The Dems' message, of course, will be "We're not Republicans!"

Which ought to be enough.
The Republican Party will press a narrative of order, cultural restoration and law-and-order security to justify authoritarian measures and corporate austerity.

The Democratic Party will push a counter‑narrative of stability, institutional defense and managed reform that seeks to contain mass anger and preserve capitalist rule.

Both narratives aim to neutralize independent working‑class politics; both aim to stave off the threat of mass, extra‑electoral mobilization.

Expect the Republicans to further radicalize the language of existential threat and national emergency. Building on the cultivation of fascist cadres within party institutions—exposed most recently in the Young Republicans revelations and the promotion of far‑right operatives inside the state apparatus—the GOP will fuse cultural grievance with state power to legitimize repression.

Their core messages will be:

> Restore order and security by framing protests, immigrant movements and workplace unrest as criminal or subversive.

> Patriotic purge by demonizing opponents as traitors, elites or foreign‑backed agents to justify emergency powers and censorship.

> Economic nationalism with promises of protection for some industries while accelerating privatization and tax breaks for Capital.

This trajectory will coincide with efforts to normalize fascistic culture and place loyalists across state institutions while subordinating democratic procedure to governance by executive fiat.

For their part, the [uppercase ‘D’] Democrats will respond by attempting to reassert themselves as the guardians of institutional continuity. Expect their message to be:

> Protect democracy and norms with appeals to courts, bureaucracy and the electoral calendar, while avoiding mass confrontation.

> Incremental relief which limits social and regulatory concessions designed to defuse protest without challenging corporate power.

> Bipartisan stability with calls for unity with parts of the capitalist class and even sections of the GOP to present a centrist alternative to chaos.

As ever, the Democratic ‘leadership’ will try to channel mass anger back into electoral mechanisms and party‑mediated reforms while it steadfastly refused to break with business or the union bureaucracy.

Both parties’ narratives reflect underlying material pressures: stagnating wages, job losses in crucial sectors, inflation, and the intensification of imperialist wars and repression.

Neither of these competing scripts are a choice for workers. Both parties serve capitalist interests and the preservation of private property.

The Republicans’ authoritarianism threatens democratic rights; the Democrats’ stability offers only regulated austerity and policing of dissent.

The working class must not be corralled into choosing between a false choice of managed decline and a slide toward dictatorship.

Could we at least please not parrot the Republicans' propaganda? The Democrats did not run purely on "We're not Trump" in 2024 (Harris had a platform that was, and still is, very easy to find online) and they won't do so in 2026 - although it probably would be enough.
