What was the name of the woman who made famous the question "Where's the beef?"

Anybody know?

This ad contained three famous words that became a national catch phrase. "Where's the Beef?" caught on after octogenarian Clara Peller bellowed it in a funny commercial for the Wendy's hamburger chain.

In the most famous, the Chicago widow, a former cosmetologist, stood at a fast-food restaurant counter with cohorts Mildred Lane and Elizabeth Shaw staring at a tiny hamburger on a huge bun. The burger was supposedly made by a Wendy's rival.

"Where's the beef?" Russian-born Peller barked in her foghorn voice.

Because Peller was hard of hearing, someone sat on the floor and tugged her skirt as a cue to deliver her line, recalls Cliff Freeman, now head of Cliff Freeman & Partners.

It became a national cry for quality. Vice President Walter Mondale used it to suggest a lack of substance in rival Gary Hart. Director Josef Sedelmaier is credited with casting Peller for a Freeman script that called for three spunky elderly ladies. But Peller had appeared in regional commercials before that.

Dancer Fitzgerald Sample, New York, an agency that's now out of business, created the campaign. Wendy's credited it with helping boost sales 31% and profit 24% in 1984. Peller, who earned more than $500,000 from the burger chain, last appeared in a Wendy's commercial late that year. Wendy's dropped her in 1985 after she popped up in a TV commercial for Campbell Soup's Prego Plus spaghetti sauce. In it, she indicated that she had "found" the beef -- in a product other than a Wendy's hamburger. She died in 1987.

I'm not sure, but "Bratcat" just doesn't seem to fit the face I remember. I am thinking it was "Clara" something or other....
