I'm going over to the US this summer and I have a four days that I'm looking for suggestions on what to do (17/7 - 20/7). So any suggestions on what to do for these days?

I'll be in New York the 16th and need to be in Phoenix the 21th so I can fly to pretty much anywhere. Was thinking about going hiking in Tahoe but looking for other options as well.

Well don't forget Arizona has something no other state or country has, the Grand Canyon. Granted it's just a hole in the ground, but hey it's impressive and I've heard the ride inside is just incredible, only need a day if you can get to it early enough in the day so you can do other things, or you can hike around in the area.

Of course if your not interested in that, there are tons of malls here. ;)

Thought about it, but hiking in the desert in the middle of the summer
I'm from Sweden after all

if you've never been to NY before, might i suggest a little sightseeing? just one or two days, perhaps. you will, after all, be right here. :>

also, what are your interests? i could come up w/ a few ideas but w/out knowing what things you like to do, it would be hard to know whether they would be interesting/boring/whatever. NYC boasts a host of museums and a tiny little area known as broadway, after all. there's some superb dining as well and probably a little something for any taste, no matter how gross or sublime.

I'm going to be in New York for a few days doing just that, what I haven't decided on is what to do when I'm done with New York :D
And this is my third visit to NY so have have seen most off the tourist attractions already. Thanks for the suggestion anyway :)

ah! well, in that case, it would seem most reasonable to catch-up with some of the friends you've already made here. 1300+ posts, been a member for 2 years here already--i imagine you must have made a few friends, no?

whatever you choose to do, i'd be interested in knowing what that decision turns out to be.

Yes, I'm considering visiting a few friends, but most of them live in Europe, only a few is from the states.

And to make it more difficult to visit them they have for some strange reason decided to not live in the same city

what? the inconsiderate, insensitive bastards! :D

obviously, i know nothing of your friends, but perhaps some of them could congregate at a single location to facilitate matters? of course, that's hardly the kind of thing one wants to suggest to people who will presumably be acting as your hosts, though...

what other things interest you in the US? emap mentioned the grand canyon which is said to be extraordinary. i've lived in the US all 35 of my years and never once been there myself. you could also go and visit boston or philadephia (the latter of which is about 1 - 1.5 hours by train from NY).

what other interests do you possess? the absence of parameters is leaving me in a state of option paralysis--i don't know what things to recommend as you've previously been here but i don't know what you've seen/done.

On this trip I'm going for scenery, so driving around or hiking I think.
Grand Canyon I might visit, thinking about it.

Or I'll drive from New York to Chicago with a detour to Niagara falls and then fly to Phoenix.
Only got 4days and I don't want to fly around half of the US :)

Somebody gave you a bad map, the Grand Canyon isn't in a desert, it's north of the hot sections, the area immediately around it is packed full of pine tree's, pine tree's don't live in a desert worth a darn. ;)

I'm not an American but I really like the Northwest for scenery, riding (horse or cycle) and hiking. It's a bit out of your way but Yellowstone or Glacier Parks are amazing areas.

After looking around at a lot of options I decided to fly to Salt Lake City and from there drive up to Yellowstone park for a few days, before going back to SLC and then fly to Phoenix.
Most other options turned out to be a too expensive for my taste :D

Skip the US and come to Canada :D

You can't go wrong with The falls. It is an amazing site. If you want hiking, I would probably suggest some place over in like Nevada, California, or a little more North.

A word to the wise: driving from New York to Chicago takes about 15 hours, more if you insist on stopping for food, fuel, or rest stops.

I suggest Colorado! I've heard it is beautiful and has good hiking.

Or go to Las Vegas. Enjoy the night life and then take a day trip to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam.
