Corrine (Corey) Roberts
25 years old
girl%2Bwith%2Bgun.jpg

Corrine put her hair up into her customary ponytail, then stepped into her uniform. Today was her first day at her new precinct. She wast exactly nervous, but she wasn't as confident as she normally was either.

This new precinct was known for having some rather chauvinistic male officers who thought women couldn't do as good of a job as men could in law enforcement. But she was just as good as any guy- and that was why she was being moved. The area she was going to was a more dangerous neighborhood. The police force was trying to cut down on crime there by transferring their "better" officers nearby so it would have better enforcement.

Corrine was one of the "better" ones.

As she climbed into her car to head to the precinct her phone on her hip buzzed. It was a text from her latest ex.

"Good luck today Corey, you deserve it".

She rolled her eyes and ignored the message. She had dumped the man because he was a wimp- and a boring one. When she had challenged him to get more creative in the bedroom he had backed away, saying he liked their sex life the way it was.

Boring.

Putting the text from her mind she parked her car at the precinct and got out.

Immediately, two male officers walked past and stared at her body. "Damn honey, you here to actually work, or is that a sexy Halloween costume?" One asked and she glared at his back.

Being beautiful only added more doubt to her status-
Most thought she was just beauty, no brains.

Sighing, she walked in and reported to her superior, ready to begin her day.

Captain Luke Hamilton.
36 years old.

timthumb.php

Luke Hamilton was busy going through the file of a new police officer assigned to him. His precinct had been given rookies from the academy for a while and it showed. Due to a fluke, several experienced officers were retired at the same time. This left Capt. Hamilton with a bunch of bewildered rookies barely knowing the front or back on their own guns. Tensions had heightened as these young and eager men and women roamed the streets looking for trouble and advancement. This, combined with an influx of gangbangers had left the neighbourhood a virtual war zone as the two forces sized each other up.

Wanting to defuse the situation rather than escalate, Capt. Hamilton had begged HQ for transfers. For once they'd listened. If Capt. Hamilton could pull this off it'd be his greatest achievment so far in his career. Defusing a potential war with transfers? If only all wars could be as easily won. Hamilton had seen enough of war and as he came home he found that any menial civilian task would be dull and feel meaningless. So he joined the police like his father and uncle before him. Slow to anger but quick to take control, Capt. Hamilton was a force to be reckoned with. He'd earned medals both as a Ranger and in the police force. Not that it mattered to him.

His musings were interrupted by a gorgeous female police officer knocked and entered the room. Ah, Corinne Roberts! He'd heard of her before as she'd been mentioned in dispatches after saving a child from a sexual predator. She had an exemplary record and looks to boot. He wasn't sure if they'd sent her because she was an able officer or simply as window dressing to make the department look good. Time would tell.

"Officer Roberts!" He stood, shaking her hand. "Have a seat."
Without any idle chit-chat, Hamilton started up on his speech about the thin blue line and Making A Difference For The Community. He was sur she'd heard this speech in one form or another before, but he couldn't play favourites.
While he rattled out his speech in short clipped sentences, he couldn't help but take notice of the beauty that sat before him, a defiant demeanor present.

"I wonder...." he thought.

Corrine listened intently as Captain Hamilton outlined her duties and obligations and responsibilities. It was all the same song she had heard before. Bottom line- her duty was to do whatever necessary to help the neighborhood become a safer place to live and visit.

She liked how Hamilton got straight to the point and was very direct. He didn't even acknowledge the fact that she was a female. And he didn't check out her chest- that she saw. That was a bonus as well.

She couldn't help but notice that he himself was a good looking man. The typical girls "hero" in uniform.

He told her she was being partnered with one of veterans of the neighborhood, an older but tough man named Frank. Frank was close to retiring desk duty- he was slowly losing the physical fitness needed to run this neighborhood- but he still had the street smarts and experience needed to help Corrine learn the ropes around there.

"This all sounds wonderful sir" Corrine replied. "You won't regret having me around. I may be young- and a female -but I'm good at my job, and I guarantee I will be able to help make this neighborhood safer... From what I understand I will be working the area around the school mostly, am I correct?"

She had a history with children. One time a child on her old precinct had been abducted. The poor little girl was dragged around town by her abductor, paraded blatantly in front of people, and nobody knew because the girl had been too scared to ask for help.

When the girl had seen a female police officer she had burst away from her captor and ran to Corrine, screaming for help. Corrine had immediately called for backup who had caught the fleeing man two blocks away. Although Corrine had not actually caught the criminal, she had been given credit, and ever since then, had earned the reputation of being good with children. She was even asked to do seminars in schools occasionally and enjoyed it.

"I'm ready for whatever you need me to do, sir."

She was eager, despite her previous experiences. Capt. Hamilton liked that. She seemed attentive enough, and bright. Above average at the pistol range and... whoah! Her physical tests put her near the top of the female officers, meaning she would give most if not all of the male officers a run for their money! He gave her a once-over. Well, she certainly looked the part. He almost regretted assigning her to Frank, but seeing as he a) was in bad shape and b) was a raging misogynist he thought Corrine could teach him a thing or two even as he taught her about the neighbourhood.

A sudden smile flashed across his face as he remembered Frank's whining. "Aw, c'mon Luke! Don't pair me with a chick! They only get in the way of real men like me, trying to do my job!" Capt. Hamilton pointed out to Frank that sure, if stuffing his face with doughnuts was a man's work, then yes, he had no equal there. And second, if he ever got that familiar with him in front of the men again he'd fine him. They stood on rank at his precinct.

"A little word of advice, officer Roberts. When talking to me officially like now or whenever other officers are present you defer to rank. I'm Captain Hamilton, you are officer Roberts. When we go drinking down the pub I am Luke and you are Corrine. Remember that and we'll get along just fine."

As he talked, Sgt. Frank Grimes appeared at the door. Hoo-boy! It was obvious to all and sundry that Sgt. Grimes was in one of his fouler moods, with a hangover as the icing on a very grumpy cake.

"Here's your partner now, officer Roberts. Sergeant, you show her the ropes."
Sgt. Grimes scoffed at that and opened his mouth to shoot it off. A well practiced icy glare from Capt. Hamilton cut that short.

"Oh, and officer Roberts?" A quick glance at Sgt. Grimes and a sardonic smile. "Best of luck!"

Corrine got a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach when she turned and saw Frank. He was big, fat, grouchy looking and smelled like stale alcohol. And he was glaring daggers at her from the get go.

Great- this should be fun.

"Good morning" she said politely to Frank holding out her hand. He merely looked at it and turned away.

"Try and keep up girl" he muttered as he lumbered away. She thought it would be no problem "keeping up" with this man. She shot a look at Luke Hamilton that said all but begged him to be joking.

She followed behind and joined Frank in the patrol car that was theirs.

"I will do the driving. It's a known fact that females don't know how to drive as well as males" he said as he climbed in the drivers seat. Corey raised her eyebrows.

"Well my, I guess I wasn't aware of that fact when I out-drove all but two men in my academy" she said sarcastically.

And so the day went on... Frank putting her down, and Corinne taking it in stride. By the end of the day she was at her wits end. She walked into the price of Hamilton and placed her palms on his desk. Glancing over her shoulder she spoke in a hushed but headed whisper.

"According to him, I'm an incompetent driver, a bad judge of character, a weakling,
And a sissy. Sir, that man is incorrigible!!!" She said frantically.

He looked her over. Uh-huh. Ol' Grimey was up to his usual tricks, it seemed. But Roberts was talking to him like she was putting demands on him. Her superior. An inward sigh. Looked like this one needed some discipline pounded into her.

"Officer Roberts, I want you to get the hell out of my office and try again. Knock, enter only when I say so, present yourself in a professional manner and then state your business. Familiarity breeds contempt, officer. Now get out and try again. Get!"

The final word a whiplash with his voice he'd perfected as a Ranger NCO.

Corrine felt her skin pale at the captains forceful words. She nodded quickly and did as asked. Stepping back into the hallway she closed the door behind her. Several male officers were walking by, and chuckled as they saw we turn as knock.

"Little Miss must have gotten in trouble" one sang and she felt herself blush.

When she knocked the captain called her in. Taking a deep breath she stopped in as closed the door behind her.

"I'm sorry about before, sir" she said quietly. "It's not like me to be so rude."

When he nodded for her to continue she took a deep breath. "Captain, do the men on your force have a problem with women officers? I did notice I'm the only woman here." She said looking him straight in the eye.

"I have been made fun of and teased all day, especially by my so-called partner." She paused. "Don't get me wrong, sir. I can handle myself. But I want to ask you if there is anything you believe I can do to stop the harassment other than lay into one of them because if it continues I can assure you, sir, I will have a hard time holding my tongue."

She was mad at the treatment she had received that day and was William to fix the situation herself but had thought it a better idea to ask her superior first before taking action.

This old story again. The precinct had lost more than its fair share of female officers due to sexual harassment and bullying. As of right now, officer Roberts was the only woman working a beat in his precinct. And she'd spent a day with a mean and hung over Grimey. That would be enough to set anyone's teeth on edge. He sympathised, but couldn't go soft on her.

"Officer Roberts, where are we?" As she was about to answer he cut her off. "That's right, one of the meanest precincts in this city. We have drug dealings practically outside our station, junkies flopping over with OD's daily, crackwhores plying their trade and pimps cajoling johns and beating up their charges. Not to mention gangbangers all set to kill us at the slightest provocation after my predecessor demanded 'a firm hand' against gangs and druggies. To top it off I get the washouts and rookies sent my way because no-one wants to work and die here. When I finally get greenlighted some experienced officers I shout 'Halleluja' and hope things are about to improve."

His voice had been rising steadily, anger and frustration visible as his face reddened and a vein throbbed on his forehead.

"And what do I get? Officers saying they'll do their damnedest to fit in, then come running to me because her colleagues are MEAN to her!? YES I'M TALKING ABOUT YOU OFFICER ROBERTS!"

She was about to speak, probably to justify her actions.

"Now look officer Roberts, being the new face is never easy. People WILL test you and tease you and haze you. If you start BITCHING about it, officer Roberts, you'll never hear the end of it. If you tough it out and let your actions and record speak for themselves you MIGHT just earn some respect around here. Take note of the word 'earn', officer Roberts. You cannot demand respect."

A pause, his features calming. If she tried walking away, he would stop her.

Corrie heard the captains words. They were harsh. Harsher then she felt she deserved. She had merely been trying to do the right thing by reporting it to her superior before taking it into her own hands.

Instead she was forced to listen as his voice got louder and more harsh. When he was finally done she stood still for a moment and then nodded.

"Yes sir, I understand". She couldn't think of anything else to say.

"Thank you for your time, sir," she said softly and then turned to step out of the door again. She knew people would be outside. His voice had been loud enough to carry through. She steeled herself for that.

She would have to put on a steel face and ignore any jeers that she heard. He was right. She was an adult- she could handle this on her own.

Taking a deep breath she reached for the door handle.

"Did I give you leave to go, officer Roberts?"

His voice cut with an icy edge. "Get back here and sit the fuck down, officer Roberts."

As she did so, he went past her and looked into the hall. Sure enough, gloating spectators were gathered around his office door.

One of the onlookers earned himself a leave without pay with the remark "You show her who's boss, Cap'n!" After the dismissal of the balbbermouth, Capt. hamilton glared at the little gathering before he snarled: "Any others want to shoot their mouth off? No? Didn't think so. Get back to work, all of you. NOW!"

He went back inside and sat down heavily, exhaling as he did so. He gazed at Roberts again. She had maintained her composure throughout, he'd give her that. Capt. hamilton hoped she could be salvaged.

He leaned back, tenting his fingers as he looked at her. "Now I know you're not new in this job, officer Roberts. And there must have been some, ah, comments about you as a female offiver of the law where you worked before.
So what changed? You've apprehended crooks, you've been on community outreach doing an excellent job. You helped that little girl that one time. I thought of you as a tough cookie, officer Roberts. And now this? What the hell did you think? I really need you to answer me."

Corrine froze in her tracks at the menacing sound of his voice. She immediately moved to the chair he indicated and sat down, glaring at her feet. She had a lot she wanted to say but she kept her mouth shut until he gave her permission to speak.

Her pretty green eyes met his with intent.

"Sir, with all due respect, I have no problem handling myself. I just thought that I should come to you and report the treatment before handling it. At my old job I had the respect of fellow officers. That didn't mean they liked me though. Because of that kid thing I got a lot of media attention. My captain also treated me different like a poster child... That didn't make me many friends. I didn't want to start off making enemies here, sir. But if I need to, in order to prove that I'm a damn good cop... Well I will do whatever necessary to make them give me a chance and respect me".

Her short speech over she shut her lips tight and waited for his response, halfway dreading it in case it were another outburst.

Capt. Hamilton rose to his feet, tall and imposing with a muscular frame.
He went around his desk and nonchalantly leaned on it, his arms crossed. He looked down on her sitting there.

"You're 'willing' to give us a chance, officer Roberts? That's damn fine of you. Yes, very noble. I hear what you're saying, but I'm not buying it. Seems to me like you feel you're entitled to special treatment because you're a woman. Well guess what; the gangbangers don't give a flying fuck what or who you are. All they see is a uniform with tits." A quick glance at hers.

"I do not want you to tolerate my men because you so 'selflessly' will buckle down and take it. I want you to suck it up because I tell you to."

He leaned close to her, his voice almost a whisper: "Do I make myself clear, officer?"

Her gaze watches him warily. When he leaned down and whispered those words her gaze turned defiant, cold even. He was an imposing man. He towered over her petite body, that was for sure. But she didn't back down.

Instead, in a voice clearly sounds resentful she spoke clearly, staring directly into hit eyes.

"Whatever you say, sir".

She hated having to back down but he was her boss and she was new on this beat. She needed to do whatever it took to be accepted even if it meant bowing down to a domineering boss.

"Am I free to go yet sit? I'm sure I have some paperwork I need to finish before I go home tonight". She hesitated, unsure of whether or not to say the next thing. "And in case you were wondering of my capabilities... Today I brought in that drug dealer your squad has been trying to get... Martinez. I caught him red handed dealing dope to a bunch of young teens near the school".

"I never questioned your capabilities, only your attitude, officer Roberts. And yes, I read the report." He couldn't quite hide a grin at her wording about how Martinez took off and she pursued him while Grimey, in her words "brought up the rear". Grimey had gained an ample rear what with all the doughnuts he'd jammed down his feedhole.

His demeanor gruff: "Dismissed, officer Roberts! Incidentally, nice collar of Martinez. Get out of here."

After she left, Hamilton was deep in thought. She was good, but too much of a ballbuster for her own good. And overly sensitive about the men teasing her. She didn't realise she wasn't treated any worse than any other new officer. But the teasing focused on her being a woman. And a gorgeous woman at that.

She needed toughening up and a lesson in humility all at the same time. What to do...

Sleep was late in coming to Hamilton that night.

Corrine took everything the captain had to say in and nodded. "Thank you sir" she said, and then stood to leave. The crowd into hall had thankfully dispersed because of the captains outburst, but still several eyes cut her way when she exited.

She merely ignored them and went to do paperwork.

That night at home she got several texts from her ex but ignored them and want to bed instead. And the next day at work was much the same. Frank putting her down every chance he got until finally, he made one too many jabs.

It was the end of the day and they were heading back to the precinct. She had just got back from writing a ticket for a man who had been speeding.

"If you were a guy he wouldn't have been nearly as nice. He was just impressed by your rack".

Corrie sat up and glared at Frank. "Look here you fat fuck! If I were a man I might get more respect sure. But I can guaran-damn-tee you that I get more respect from suspects than you! You must know what they have to say about you, especially when we are in the drive through for the donut shop. So if you wanna talk about getting respect, lose about 150 pounds then come see me!"

They had just parked their car and she stormed out, and into the precinct to her desk where she began paperwork. She saw a red faced Frank beat on Hamilton's desk and when he entered she heard yelling.

Groaning she dropped her head to her desk and just waited for the captain to explode on her.

Like Captain Hamilton needed this.
A whiny fat sergeant and a primadonna female officer.
Hamilton felt the onset of a migraine building in his head.
Careful Luke. You know how you get when these things pop up.

He'd listened to Grimes version of how Roberts had made hurtful comments about his 'glandular problem'. That he had the nerve to call his box-a-day of doughnuts a 'glandular problem' was more than Hamilton could fathom. Hamilton was pretty sure there was more to the story than Grimey let on, but he sure as hell wasn't going to get the truth from Frank Grimes, the asshole. Only one thing for it. Ordering Sgt. Grimes to stay he fetched Roberts with four words, hitting her like sniper bullets. "You. My office. Now."

As he led her back to his office it felt like someone tried pushing his right eye out. Damn migraine. Damn these two immature officers. "Officer Roberts. Sgt. Grimes has just been telling me about how you made light of his, ah, glandular problem" he saw Grimes blush at that, pretty sure she saw it too "and I'd just like to hear your side of the story." As Hamilton spoke, Grimes' face grew redder by the second. Despte his migraine, Hamilton waited expectantly. This should be good.

Corrine stood and followed the captain without a word.

"Sir I will tell you exactly what I told him. I called him a fat fuck and told him I could command more respect than he when he is sitting there eating donuts. But may I say that was after about the twentieth sexist comment today, sir. I can only take so much, and overdid it today".

She glared at the fat man beside her. "Sir he even made a derogatory comment to me in front of a man we pulled over. As we were checking him for impaired driving by showing him how to walk heel to toe, Frank actually asked me if I could see my toes because of my chest getting in the way. He actually caused the suspect to laugh at me and lose all respect, sir. He's causing me to not be able to do my job!"

Her voice had risen as she spoke, every sentence growing a little louder than the next until she was almost shouting. She reined herself in and groaned to herself, her head falling back. Shit.

She had just yelled at her boss.

Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. SHIT.

He was going to hate her by her first week.

"I apologize sir" she said softly, knowing it would do no good whatsoever.

Oh if only she hadn't yelled at him.

His migraine throbbed with every word she uttered, building to a crescendo of pain as her temper flared. He turned on Grimes. He seemed upset, snorting and wheezing, red in the face. Hamilton descended on him like a ton of bricks. Grimes was about to speak when Hamilton cut him off.

"Who gave you permission to speak? We've talked about this before, Sgt. Grimes. You seem to be unable to listen. Don't deny it, there have been too many complaints leveled against you. Gather your things, you're going on a one-week leave without pay. Get!"

He turned to Roberts. What to do with her? She'd been in the right now, but she had an attitude problem. Yet she was a fine officer. He slumped.

"What am I gonna do with you, Roberts? You just cost me one of my most experienced men for a week, all because of some remark about your, uh, breasts. And to top it off you start screaming at two superiors in the ranking officers office."

He went to shut the door.

"Have a seat. This might take a while."

She was shocked when Hamilton shouted at Grimes instead of her. He sent grimes away without pay for a week, and her eye grew huge. Now what would she do without a partner?? His voice was much more calm when he spoke to her. He merely told her to sit down and shook his head.

Corrine wanted to speak but refrained. He hadnt told her to yet, and she had learned not to speak out of turn with him. It was a good way to get yelled in his precinct.

So instead she merely sat there, looking at his desk in a sulky stare. He was making her sweat on purpose and she fidgeted in her chair under his gaze. Lord, but he was intimidating. She had heard he had before had a career in the forces and she could understand why. He must have been spectacular at it.

"Now Roberts, I hope to God your dashcam can substantiate at least parts of your story. Otherwise you've made me look like a real ass in trusting you."

Her attitude problem, how to broach THAT tender little subject. She seemed to think she was entitled to special treatment. She wasn't.

"Do you know Roberts, I find myself getting a little tired of this. Let me tell you a story. No, bear with me. It's about a rookie cop, full of himself. He's just returned from overseas service with the armed forces. He's seen the bear and heard the owl, he knows he can take tons of shit and keep going. He starts at a new precinct, apparently in one of the toughest parts of town. As he gets there the first day he KNOWS they know about his service record and his combat awards. He expects a certain amount of respect. He feels he's earned it, that he's entitled to a modicum of respect, even awe, because of what he's been through."

He cringed at the memory, remembering the cocksure way he had strutted into the precinct HQ.

"All the guys started off by calling him 'hero'. It was 'hey hero, you sure you're up for MORE combat'? Or 'hey hero, remember that here we ask first THEN shoot'. Or 'see that little old lady over there? Think you can interrogate her, 'hero'? And on and on it went, day after day, week after week. Do you know what he did? He proved to them that being a veteran of war wasn't all he was. He was also a damn fine officer. But first and foremost, he kept his mouth shut because he knew they were testing him. And he NEVER" -he slammed his palm and yelled - "went to his superior officer, whining about it.
It seems to me this isn't going to sink into that pretty little head of yours, Roberts, so what am I going to DO with you."

He was on his feet, leaning in as he spoke, smelling her sweat and perfume and seeing her nervousness. Despite his migraine he felt a stirring in his groins. Oh dear God, that's all I need he thought to himself.

Her eyes looked up into his as he berated her. When he was done, she spoke.

"With all due respect, sir, I have not whine very much to you. Yesterday I was merely informing you of the situation and asking for your advice on how to handle in but instead of giving it to me, you just flipped on me. And today. Today I didn't come in here to you, did I? I didn't come in here or speak a word to you. I handled the situation the best I knew how. I can take the teasing remarks and jokes. But these went beyond jokes, sir. He actually made a suspect lose respect for me!"

Her voice had risen again. This was a touchy subject with her.

"Sir, being a woman I DO believe I have to work harder to earn a suspects respect. And then once I have, to have that respect ripped from beneath me because my PARTNER thinks I'm incapable and thinks its funny to point that out... Sir that I can not deal with. And yes, my dash cam WILL prove this to you. You wl see and hear Grimes make the comment, followed by more than a few cheeky and snide remarks by the man we had pulled over."

Taking a deep breath she met his gaze squarely. "I do not believe I have done anything wrong in this situation. And yeah now you're down an experienced cop on the neighborhood. For that I apologize. However you are now up and officer who will actually be able to CATCH a criminal if they run. AND bring them under control. THAT, sir, I can guarantee".

Oh God! His head was throbbing to beat the band, the band being a woman raising her voice at him in his own office. Spots started dancing before his eyes as he tried to contain his anger. Would she ever shut up?

"Enough!" He had to shut her up. His temper was short at the best of times, and with a migraine dancing a merry jig through his head he was two seconds away from exploding.

"I get that you're sensitive, Roberts. But the remark in and of itself was harmless. I dismissed Sgt. Grimes for a week and docked his pay unless you failed to notice. I did not do it for this one misdemeanor alone, that much I can tell you." He thought it best not to mention Grimes' history with women in general. The man was a pig, but a damn good officer.

"If Sgt. Grimes decides to press the matter I hope to God your comments about him don't show up on the dashcam, as it will weaken your case considerably. Your comment was decidedly hurtful, his could be construed as humor. I'm not saying you harassed him, I know Sgt Grimes well enough to believe your version over his. But if the film is presented as evidence and your retort to him is on it, you'll be lucky if you get off scot free."

He needed to gather his thoughts for a bit. A sadistic clawed monkey was beating the worlds loudest gong inside his head.

"As for you having to work harder to earn respect I've heard the same song from several ethnicities and minorities. 'Oh, this is because I'm black/gay/jewish/female etc!' No. This is because you FUCKED UP! Toe the line, suck it up, cry to your momma, howl at the moon, do whatever the hell you have to do to get over yourself, but get the fuck over yourself, officer Roberts! This is a rough job and we sometimes attract rough employees and 'customers'. Deal with it. If you feel the need to report or berate every person that does or says something to you that you consider to be wrong, you'll be spent by the time you turn thirty."

He needed to end this. Now.

"And finally officer Roberts, we're not in the habit of sending officers out on their own. Tomorrow is my turn on the outreach beat. You'll be my partner. Now go home and think about our talk. Oh, and officer Roberts? Never raise your voice at me again."

Her heart was racing as she left the precinct that day. Jesus, what had she gotten herself into when she accepted this transfer? It was like she was a scapegoat or something. She got that everyone got discriminated against sometime for some reason but when it affected her job like that, wasn't there a problem?

Trying to push the thoughts far from her mind, after work she headed to the gym where she did two hours of cardio and one of strength training. Finally she went home, ate, and crashed.

The next morning she took extra care making sure she was perfectly presentable. She was working with the captain, after all. And maybe she even added a dash of perfume ... Hell, if she was gonna be treated like a girl she might as well smell like one.

When she arrived at the precinct she walked directly to the captains door and knocked. Biting her lip, she waited nervously for her day as the captains partner to begin.

One officer walked up behind her and spoke quietly in her ear. "Just show a little cleavage, he will like you better then".

Instead of a mean comment back, Corrine just smiled at the man. "He wouldn't know what to do if I did that" she said back, and saw the captain standing there.

"Good morning sir!" She said, still smiling. She was goin to try a different approach that day. Try to be more friendly and easygoing. She could only wonder if the captain had heard the hushed exchange between herself and the other officer.

Luke Hamilton heard the little exchange, smiling to himself. She was learning.

He put on a brusque demeanor. "Officer Roberts, good morning. Our goal for today is to show our faces in the community. We'll be the friendly police officers walking and talking, greeting and nodding. This is about gaining and earning trust, officer Roberts."

He'd planned a long and varied route. It would take them through the best and worst neighbourhoods of the precinct. They'd be out there with no immediate backup. At the end of the route, assuming there were no mishaps along the way, the local elementary school.

He couldn't help but notice her subtle change in demeanor. She'd also taken extra care to look good today. And she smelled nice. Hamilton suddenly became a bit selfconscious, having just arrived from the gym. He'd showered, sure. But the smell of sweat mixed with his deodorant seemed brutal compared to her- why was he thinking of her like this?

"After you, Roberts. Today we earn our keep. We walk all the way."

The first stop was a nearby park where old people liked to gather to gossip, read the papers or play chess. Their job was to look the park over and chase off vagrants and peddlers.

The park was already filled with the elderly when they arrived. One of them called out to him, and they went over. Hamilton said his hello's then introduced his latest officer, Roberts. Hamilton noticed a few of the older men ogling her openly and one or two men stuck their heads together and whispered something whilst eyeing Roberts, snickering. Most of the ladies beamed at Hamilton, while one or two looked at Roberts with admiration or pity. One of the more feisty old girls yelled at Roberts "You don't take no guff from him, Missy! You show him what a woman can do!", pointing at Hamilton.

Corrine was surprised to hear they would be walking the entire day, but she was fine with it. Actually she was happy about it. She enjoyed exercise and she wouldn't have to be confined with Hamilton in a small car ... Not that that would be horrible but he intimidated her and she turned into a bumbling idiot it seemed around him.

They walked first to a small park near the precinct. A lot of elderly people were there and called out to Hamilton. He seemed to be a popular character amongst them. His whole demeanor changed as well. He was happier, more carefree, out here. It was incredible.

One ladies comment made Corrine laugh out loud, her entire face lighting up beautifully. She glanced at Captain Hamilton and saw him watching her then. She felt Her cheeks turn slightly pink as she quickly looked away.

"I'll do my best, ma'am," she told the older woman.

The next spot they stopped was a bar district close by that was known for having some rough characters amongst it. Drugs, alcohol, domestic disputes, they all ran rampant in the area.

Corrine found herself being much more alert as they traveled through this area. People would cross the street to avoid walking near them. Leery gazes were cast their way.

"Grimes hasn't brought me through here yet" she mentioned as she walked side by side with Luke. He was an incredible presence, strong and forceful looking bar doubted anybody would try to mess with him.

From behind them, a group of miscreants gathered and began to make cat calls at Corrie.

"Wanna use them cuffs on me?" One shouted. "I gotta bed upstairs!"

Corrine blushed slightly but kept walking, doing her best to ignore the jibes. Luke Hamilton had told her to stop being so sensitive after all.
