what music are your kids into?

Mine, mostly.

The boy talks knowledgeably on blues and rock. The youngest girl likes Ralph McTell also.

i have no children, but my niece and her friends are into sublime, led zeppelin, bad country and other white trash music. it hurts my soul.

I don't know. I used to hide the radio from them. For some strange reason, they're afraid to bring their music around me.

Both my kids have definite musical tastes. Both love the Beatles (thanks to me), but my daughter especially is a fan. They both hate jazz (thanks to me). Daughter loves My Chemical Romance, Rancid and all kinds of crazy shit. Son likes ELP, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, plus many many bands I've never heard of until he mentions them. Both like classical music and some show music cause they grew up close enough to NYC to be exposed to lots of kinds of live music.

Pomplamoose because he is in love with Nataly Dawn. He also likes Flaming Lips and Guided by Voices because I have forced him to listen to them since birth, but he prefers listening to music from any attractive woman, he's not picky about voice or talent, but if she's cute, he will buy her song on iTunes.

My eldest is into modern urban.

Her Christmas Present List has us trawling the local HMV store for obscure labels and artists I've never heard of, and probably wouldn't want to listen to.

When she plays her music, I take my hearing aids out.

Mozart. Seriously. The kid plays the cello and thinks Wolfgang was a god. There might be something to this genetics stuff...

All three of mine sing (or sung) in a choir. They all play the piano and at least one other instrument.

They like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach as well as their own choice of modern music. They even like Status Quo.

Mostly southern rock these days. The other one softer indie stuff, I think.

I don't have any kids, but Cammy likes such a weird array of music. I know that he was pretty big into 80s shit, but lately he's said that he doesn't like metal anymore... I know he doesn't like techno, because when I listen to it he tells me he doesn't like it. He doesn't really like rap either... You know, I've never heard him listen to anything. He doesn't do anything where he would listen to music. I only listen to it when I drive and he doesn't.

No Duran Duran?? :)

I don't think its that unusual for kids to hide things like that from their parents, especially if the parents are kind of old fashioned. When I was young, I didn't tell my parents I listened to rock music until I was 14. I bought an Iron Maiden shirt and my mom asked what's that and I had to come out of the closet and admit I didn't listen to Frank Sinatra and big band music. I thought they would freak, but they were surprisingly ok with it.

That must have been very difficult for you, but kudos on taking that first step.

What strikes me reading these responses is the fact that, for the most part, today's youth just don't identify with music the way the last few generations did. The fact they listen to older music also shows how weak the new music is today. I don't know what I would have identified with as a teenager without metal, punk, etc. I needed angry, rebellious music to channel my hatred toward adult society. These kids today concern me.
