In your opinion, what is the most moving song ever written?
I was just watching the Irish Tenors on PBS and I have to say that "Danny Boy" deserves to be the classic that it is. I’m not sure it’s my “all time favorite” in terms of emotion, but it’s up there. What’s your favorite song (Note “song” not just “lyrics”.) in terms of its ability to move you emotionally?

One song is tough, fishie--very tough. :D

I can't do it. I thought about what I listen to over and over that always moves me and I'm stuck between three.

1. In My Life, The Beatles
2. Timer, Laura Nyro
3. All I Want, Joni Mitchell

For the combination of music and lyric.

There's probably more--I wanted to say Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez but it's not a song.

Nothing gets to me the way Pachebel's Canon does. Also music from Enya and The Corrs. And a few others.

A massed choir singing "Jerusalem" will always get the spine tingling and the throat aching. After that I'd have to say a thrush singing at full throttle.

Nothing you've ever heard, or could appreciate fully. It's by Thomas Andersson Wij, a folk singer (I think that's the right term, Dylan-esque kinda guy.) writing in my native tongue, and would need a better poet than me for translation. "Sanningen om dig" (The Truth About You) is not only one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, but the lyrics sans music is hands down the best poem I've ever read.

For something a little bit more accesible I recommend selected tracks from K's Choice. Sarah Bettens can write and sing with absolute clarity about things that would seem trite with someone else's words. Gets me everytime.

Otherwise, Rachmaninov and Grieg never seems to get it wrong. But that's not songs per se.

Quentin's Theme, from Dark Shadows....brings back some haunting memories from my childhood, and Pink Floyd's, The Wall. ( the entire two disk set)

I've got a little black book
I write poems in,
got a bag, got a toothbrush and a comb,
when Im a good dog,
they sometimes throw me a bone...

Im getting damn sick of bones...

Hey I took the name Angeline because I liked Angelique from Dark Shadows (but Angelique was taken).

I mean Angeline's my real name. um really.

I doesn't matter

if it's sung by Judy Garland, Jane Monheit, or the local high school choir, I cannot listen to this song without tears welling in my eyes. "Over the Rainbow".

k.

To make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck...

...it has to be one of the following -

The singing of `We'll keep the red flag flying here!` at the end of a political rally which always makes me want to man a barricade or storm a bastion of fascism!

Then raise the scarlet standard high. (chorus)
Within its shade we'll live and die,
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer,
We'll keep the red flag flying here.

Or a spirited rendition of the La Marseillaise, the French national anthem. Remember the scene in `Casablanca` were they sing it to drown out the German songs? Brings a lump to my throst every time!

So what the hell I am doing here in comfortable, rural Wales? I think I'd better move to Paris and join a socialist commune! :nana:

Oh yes! Pink Floyd rules!

But as far as tear jerkers, only one reduces me to tears in a matter of notes.

God Bless the USA! (I think it was Lee Greenwood?)

I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free
and I won't forget the men who died to give that right to me.

And I'll gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today
cause there aint no doubt I love this land
God bless the USA!

the hairs on the back of my neck are standing on end just typing it

Syn

Too many to pick one. Or even a handful. Every major memory, time, or person in my life has a song attached to it in my brain and every song a memory, time, or person.

so many~~~

to choose but, after looking on my I tunes the only most played is Cohen
and Dance me til the end of love...thats my happy song ..I love the visuals in it...

but , what song moves me most would be ...Suo Gan..from The Empire of the Sun....
that gives inspiring thoughts and helps to let go of negative thoughts...

and I guess , Dreamcatcher by Secret Garden..the entire cd is amazing but , that song resonates with an experience...

Oh, and for my other...Poet's Heart by Kate Wolf..

4° by TOOL...big surprise there huh.

It might be blasphemous to choose a French song but my vote goes to Edith Piaf and Non, Je Ne Regret Rien

Non, Rien De Rien, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien
Ni Le Bien Qu'on M'a Fait, Ni Le Mal
Tout Ca M'est Bien Egal
Non, Rien De Rien, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien
C'est Paye, Balaye, Oublie, Je Me Fous Du Passe

And one at a complete tangent and moving in a very different way, Bob Dylan, Lay Lady Lay

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Whatever colors you have in your mind
Ill show them to you and youll see them shine

Because let's face it, if she moves you, it's exactly what you want to do!

Pink Floyd Lovers, Unite! I took my daughter to see them for her high school graduation. Needless to say, she was blown away- with a little help from Mom and friends and a southerly breeze! lol Just bought another PF T-shirt 2 days ago.

But...

The 1st song that came to mind when I read this thread is Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman singing "Time to say goodbye." I know y'all are familiar with it.

Patti LaBelle and Luther VanDross absolutely put me on the floor with...

So many promises never should be spoken
Now I know what loving you cost
Now we're up to talking divorce
And we weren't even married
On my own
Once again now
One more time
By myself

No one said it was easy
But it once was so easy
Well I believed in love
Now here I stand
I wonder why

I'm on my own
Why did it end this way
On my own
This wasn't how it was supposed to be
On my own
I wish that we could do it all again

And Cynthia Clausen singing "Softly and tenderly" will bring tears to your eyes. It's the theme from A Trip To Bountiful.

and thats just the tip of the iceberg. Music can sometimes completely carry me away- deBussy's Claire deLune, for instance. Or it can peel my clothes off, ie. Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game", or it can make me fall deeply in love as in Chris deBurghs "Lady In Red" (but only til the song finishes. lol)

Patti LaBelle was Laura Nyro's first backup singer. She (Patti) is from my hometown--but she got all the singing talent, darn her.

I used to love Clair de Lune until I heard my son practice it on the clarinet about 48,000 times.

O mio babbino caro

I once attended a big Birthday celebration for an Italian man who had about 400 relatives there. His deceased daughter who had died of cancer about a year earlier had previously recorded on videotape 'O mio babbino caro' (O my beloved father) When it was played the emotional impact was ,well overwhelming.

Second The Welsh Rugby crowd singing 'Bread of Heaven' at either the old Cardiff Arms Park or the new Millennium Stadium when it looks as though their team might beat England. 100,000 singing hymns or warsongs as only Welshmen can is some experience. :)

Pushit by TOOL, the 13min 'Comfortable Place' version from Salival, No Quarter from the same album, plus half of Lateralus hold up pretty high in my estimation.

Wine by Saul Williams is quite inspirational.

The River, Thunder Road and Born to Run by Springsteen.

'You'll never Walk Alone' by Jerry and the Pacemakers, but thats purely because of its connections with Liverpool Football club and Hillsborough.

'Deutschland, Deutschland Uber Alles' can be quite stirring (the wicked power of propaganda)

Any of Chopins Nocturnes get me feeling too.... usually 5 different things in as many minutes, which I don't know is a good or bad thing.

But nothing can truly compare to the Beautiful 9th... Beethovens 'Ode to Joy'... Gorgeousness and gorgeosity.

In honesty though there are probably too many to list.

Now that is more like the kind of song I was expecting in reply to my question. - I would add "TAPS" at sunset over a military cemetery.
There are also more seasonal songs that I always respond to, like Handel’s Messiah, or “Silver Bells”.
