Religion is always....complex.
Tolerance implies differing opinions...although I agree the line between seeing differences and "ridiculing" is a thin one. However...if one tries to be as sensitive as possible...isn't that the best one can do? I mean, if you let a group decide what "tolerance" is...eventually you will have someone who says giving them all your money is the only way not to offend their deity/customs/ancestors/magic beans/etc.
I have known a few mormons and they were the nicest, most moral, hardworking people I have ever known. They...tended to lose religious arguments, but so what? Religion isn't often based on what one can argue. (I guess that's why they don't call it science. erm...my apologies to Scientologists).
I see an interesting issue...some people consider religion to be an "interesting cultural phenomenon based on personal choice" -- much like what food you prefer. Some see it as "mystical information yielding underlying truth about existance where all spiritutality is one". Some see it as "truth beyond the physical universe" (i.e. some is right and some is wrong). Some see it as "an opiate of the masses" and "the biggest evil ever to beset humankind".
No wonder religious threads cause ...erm...intense discussion.
We don't even agree on what it is.
