Can someone please give me the word that fits in here?

"Eric," said Marjorie, with a _______ smile. "Is there something going on between you and this girl that you haven't let on so far?"

The missing word should show a knowing, mischievous, evocative kind of smile. She is a playful type and a friend of Eric's, so keep that dynamic in mind.

My first reaction was mischievous as well or either a "soft sly, knowing grin" or a "playful knowing smirk." I think "smirk" might fit the bill better than "grin."

Hey, and congrats on graduating!

See, for me, "Smirk" has a nasty connotation to it. A smirk usually is the prelude for something unpleasant that was/will be said.

Interesting, my two lovebird characters are constantly smirking at each other and for me it's a cute thing and the characters are about to play.

That works as they're a couple, its like a wink.

Maybe I just feel that way because many have told me I have a nasty smirk.

Mischievous, coy, cheeky all sound to me like they'd convey the meaning.

What's wrong with the words you have already come up with; "with a knowing, mischievous, evocative smile"?

Coy was my first reaction, but I like impish, mischievous and coquettish, too.

I would use 'teasing'

Or if she already knows the answer and is just trying to make him say it maybe 'half hidden'

Would really have to read more to decide.

I'd wager that, given all of the good ideas, he's already well past this now.
