I'll be heading there in a few weeks and looking for something to get into for the evening. It'll be just myself and don't want to be couped up in a hotel room all night.

Any ideas?

It's a great city to visit and one I would feel safe in if alone, even in the evenings (and I'm a female). You didn't mention what part of the city you would be staying in so I'm assuming it is downtown.

If so, I'd highly recommend a nice walk to the North End. This is the Italian neighborhood and I thought it was much more impressive than NYC's Little Italy. My traveling buddy and I stumbled upon a great pizza place off the beaten path. The atmosphere is casual and the food was good. The waitresses are fun to watch as they yell back and forth. If you like sweets and/or expresso/cafe, take in one of the local bakeries. The walk back and forth to your hotel will work off the calories. The local older women that hang around the bakeries are a hoot to chat with and aren't shy.

The downtown parks (I've forgotten the name...the green?) is also a nice place for an early evening stroll. The row of historic taverns are nice. I found the best little bar close to the Omni hotel that I think is named The Tiniest Bar, but understand they were going to tear it down and construct a building or parking lot. Too bad.

If you have any interest in sports, I'd highly recommend taking the subway to Fenway Park for a Red Sox game.

I hope this helps. Freedom Trail (again, think that name is correct) is a great walk but not for the evenings. Enjoy your visit.

There is nothing to do in Boston. No sports teams, no museums, no restaurants, no historical sites, no bars, no music scene, no sex shows, no nothing. Just stay in and masturbate. You will be much better off. :p

I went to school near there, but it's been over 15 years. The two tallest buildings (Hancock and Prudential towers) have observation decks which are fun. The Prudential had a full 360 view, but the Hancock had a neat historical geographical presentation of the Boston area during the revolutionary war. Faneuil Hall is an interesting touristy area downtown.

There was feature called something like the "red trail" that you could walk on foot. It was a red stripe painted on the sidewalk a couple of miles line. Tourist brochures would give a description of the sites that you encountered while walking. I think that it is worth taking a tour bus through the city to have a narrated tour early in your trip so that you can better appreciate many of the sites later on.

If you enjoy colleges, then there are several in the area. MIT is right across the river to the north, and Harvard is about 1 mile on foot beyond MIT. Both are accessible by the Red Line (subway) if you don't want to walk very far. Harvard Square is nice, and it's the home of the Click and Clack radio show.

There was an interesting computer museum if you are an uber geek.

It'll be the first weekend in June since I'm flying in on Thursday and leaving Sunday to attend a powerlifting seminar. What I was looking for was something to get into Saturday night since Friday night I'll be in bed early for the seminar that begins at 8am. Since it'll be just myself, I wasn't sure what would be fun to get into and going to a baseball game kind of bores me.

Thanks for the replies thus far.

The Museum of Science is pretty good. There's a planitarium and an IMAX theatre. The Irish bars in the area can be fun.

What to do in Boston

Lots of history in Boston as others have mentioned.
Great Restaurant's: Capital Grille, Blue Room, Ginza (great Sushi), The Elephant Walk or since you said you'll be alone you could walk over to Fanuel Hall and mingle with the tourists. They usually have live music outdoors in the summer and you can get something to eat.
Comedy Clubs: Comedy Connection, Nicks, Dick Doherty's, Improv Asylum
Nightlife: Paradise Lounge, Avalon, Roxy, Jillian's, The Rack (been years since I've been to any so I don't know what the scene is like these days. If you walk to Kenmore Square there are a bunch of them right behind Fenway Park)
Bars: We have so many it will make your head spin, but I don't really go to any so I can't recommend anything in particular. It seems like the Irish pubs are the places that friends go to.
Sports: Oh yeah. That's out.
Theater: Many shows. Nice little theater district so you can walk around and check everything out without much hassle.
Art: MFA, the new ICA, Isabella Stuart Gardner

Boston Common has sports and crazy people. The Public Gardens (right across the street) has the swans and lovers walking hand in hand.

or

take a Harbor cruise, go to the beach, and so much more. The best part is that it's a small city and you can walk everywhere downtown and not get into any trouble.

Have Fun

I was in Boston earlier in the year and my long weekend wasn't long enough to see all the things I wanted. I suggest you get a guide book & prioritise what interests you.

The North End for sure, great restaurants, coffee, desserts (check out Finale), and then walk south around Boston Harbor past the piers, and into the Seaport. You can see Logan Airport and watch the planes taking off and landing. You can also walk all the way around to the Bank of America concert pavillion and catch some music.

The Commons and the Public Garden are beautiful, and great for people watching.

Take a Duck Tour, and end up driving down the Charles River. They are a blast and very funny!

The Gardner Museum, in the Fens, the MFA on Huntington Ave, or the all new and visually stunning ICA (Inst. of Contemporary Art), also in the Seaport.

Newbury Street in the Back Bay for more people watching, shopping, restuarants, and wine bars. Charles Street also, which is on the back side of Beacon Hill.

Really, there is so much to do, you can't possibly be bored :D
