Something that I was made aware of just a moment ago.
For instance - Why, in spanking stories, do cotton panties tend towards greater effect?

1) If they were silk or satin panties, you'd want to stroke them.
2) Cotton panties remind us of childhood, putting the spanker/spankee in those relative positions of adult/child
3) Cotton panties don't distract like frilly or lacy panties which you want for display purposes--for voyeurism as compared to more...pragmatic activities.
4) Easier to remove cotton panties--other materials may slip or bunch up, etc.

At least, those are my thoughts.

Seriously, they're what you probably got through the first time you got beneath a panty. At least, they're probably the first panty you got through that you weren't meant to get through.

Very good point. The thought of accidental exposure or the seduction that would be necessary for them to be seen is very arousing. I don't really associate it with youth, most teenagers seem to be wearing thongs (which they're happy to show us by wearing their pants far too low ), but it's definitely about someone who isn't actively trying to appear sexy. In my case (and possibly many others) it also has to do with experience. My first time was with a young lady wearing yellow cotton panties. Depends on context. I had one character who was otherwise kind of wild and free wear them, right before seducing another woman into a first-time lesbian encounter. The only thing I have to add this and the other posts is that while white has its appeal, calico or childish prints like pastel polka dots or little kitties (not pussies) etc. can work well for the child-like evocations.

I suppose not, but somehow, I think of it as being a guy thing. Of course, a woman might have a fetish for wearing crotchless panties and short skirts. Or maybe no panties. I suppose a lesbian could have a collection of panties once worn by sexy women, just like a man could. Somehow, I can't imagine a gay man having any interest in other men's underwear, except for removing it.

The majority of my stories involve panties, but usually there is no reference to the material. In some of them, the women start out naked, or just wearing a bathrobe, and in others they aren't wearing any underwear. I don't write that many spanking stories and the women usually start out wearing panties, but I don't bother to describe them. Sometimes I describe panties as "silky" but that's about as far as I go.

I have a role-playing story where the woman is a schoolgirl and another where she is a girl scout selling cookies. Both of them are wearing extremely short uniform skirts, only about six inches wide, and nothing under them. In these, I leave the skirts on, just flip them out of the way. Both are written in first person, by the way.

My husband and I just completed some... ahem... research on the subject...

Caveat: all of the following is IMHO YMMV

Cotton in any color has a more "familiar" or "intimate" association. If a woman allows someone to see her in cotton, it's because she is comfortable with him, i.e. a husband, familiar lover, close friend or family.

Cotton in a solid color has a more "wifey" kind of feel. It has all of the above implications plus an invitation to look and touch.

Cotton white is utilitarian, not inviting but not necessarily "stay away".

For spanking purposes, cotton is more snug. It allows the hand to feel more of the contour and has less of the "air bag" feeling of other materials. A sweaty hand doesn't stick to cotton the way it does to nylon or satin. It feels smoother and doesn't pull with the hand.

Cotton feels like a woman's skin more than silk or satin.

OK, time to go do some more research...
