just asking out of curiosity ... so if people reply to this thread please keep to the spirit in which the thread was started :)

as i understand it in the BDSM context its like a dom ... but is an alpha male someone who is dom in all situations or should i say wishes to be in charge of all situations ? im not sure if thats just within a relationship or in all everyday situations too

i've heard a few people identify themselves as an alpha male and some women say they were attracted to alpha males i just wanted to ask a little more about it because all i know is vague mentions of it and if its being mentioned i prefer to know the full picture :) ... i did have lance in mind when starting this thread but anyone is free to reply :)

In the animal kingdom it's the male who rules the pack and mates with all the bitches.

In the human world (technically animal but not for the purpose of this statement) it's a term used to mock little men (and I'm referring to their brain matter, naught else) who try to make others think they rule while really they just look sad and whinny.

In X-men its used to classify the top level mutants, like Cyclops and Wolverine, for example.
Although that's probably not the answer you were looking for :D

In nature there is a pecking order, and the Alpha's are the leaders.

In a wolf pack there is an alpha pair, male and female. They are the only one's who normally mate. However, in the wild the alpha pair do make the final desions in all things, but they do listen to the input of their suborinates.

In human terms it usually means a take charge type; not so much a dom, but a leader others wish to follow and will follow because they have confidence in that person to get them where they want to go.

A lot of our best presidents would be considered Alpha types and not doms.

And yes, there are Alpha females.

And yes, there are Alpha wanna be's, but the rest of us call them anal retentives or assholes coz they are full of bluster but don't really have the leadership ablity to pull it off without bullying or letureing.

Have you tried talking with your spouse? Instead of lashing out like this?

i knew the animal kingdom part but just wondered how it worked with the human world ... please sunstruck you know i like you but i don't want this thread to become insults :) ... i did ask honestly out of curiosity

i didn't know if alpha male is a term used by people to describe themselves ... or if its actually a "real" psychological term

I think the true alpha male is deeply in touch with his entire being. He is self assured and self actualized. He gives of himself with a determination and strength not all men have. He is in control but willing to be out of control. He brings honesty, caring, straightforwardness, direction, protection, love, pleasure, compromise (yes the alpha does compromise), and more to all that he does. This person is powerful and a leader often larger than life. The alpha male is not a negative person. Sometimes when one is so confident and sure of what they want in life people view them in an unbecoming manner.

Just my opinion.

Maybe this will help.

How to Become the Alpha Male
by REd-xL

Have you noticed that guys that generally receive the most respect from other guys are the ones that get girls all the time?

Regular guys who have problems with girls generally align themselves with alpha males for reasons of status, acceptance, and the hopes of using the alpha male's friendship to pick up on his stellar success with girls.

Wanna be the alpha male?

Here's how: Whenever you're surrounded by other guys (95% have trouble with women), flirt with nearby girls. Do this often enough, and the guys who used to laugh at you will start to slowly begin laughing with you! Girls love a guy who can garner respect from others.

thanks ishmael that's interesting ... i wonder if its possible to be diagnosed an alpha male by a psychiatrist

Quote: And mates with all the bitches.

That's not true, in the wild the Alpha pair mates. If he mated with all the bitches their hunting grounds would be over run with pups and they would all starve.

I guess that would depend on whether or not you consider it a mental disorder, lol.

It's pop-psychology at best, more like psychobabble.

I've always thought of the term as relating to qualities such as strength, confidence, dominance, ability, assuredness and leadership.

I don't think of it in a bdsm way, but then again I don't use the word dominant in that way either...I'm a dominant alpha type A kinda personality in everything I do.

In a light-hearted away, I always think of the tune Leader of the Pack....

LEADER OF THE PACK
The Shangri-Las
- #1 hit in 1964

[spoken]
Is she really going out with him?
Well, there she is. Let's ask her.
Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearing?
Mm-hmm
Gee, it must be great riding with him
Is he picking you up after school today?
Uh-uh
By the way, where'd you meet him?

I met him at the candy store
He turned around and smiled at me
You get the picture? (yes, we see)
That's when I fell for (the leader of the pack)

My folks were always putting him down (down, down)
They said he came from the wrong side of town
(whatcha mean when ya say that he came from the wrong side of town?)
They told me he was bad
But I knew he was sad
That's why I fell for (the leader of the pack)

One day my dad said, "Find someone new"
I had to tell my Jimmy we're through
(whatcha mean when ya say that ya better go find somebody new?)
He stood there and asked me why
But all I could do was cry
I'm sorry I hurt you (the leader of the pack)

[spoken]
He sort of smiled and kissed me goodbye
The tears were beginning to show
As he drove away on that rainy night
I begged him to go slow
But whether he heard, I'll never know

Look out! Look out! Look out! Look out!

I felt so helpless, what could I do?
Remembering all the things we'd been through
In school they all stop and stare
I can't hide the tears, but I don't care
I'll never forget him (the leader of the pack)

well psychiatrist's don't just diagnose mental disorders :)

but you're right it probably is psychobabble :)

calypso_21 the way you describe it there is no negatives about being an alpha male ... i thought that alpha males need to be in control was a dominating thing of their character and maybe a negative point ? although also could be seen as part of their positive points also

There are several tests that have been devised to indicate Alpha characteristics. I think that the Univ. of Minn. and the Univ. of Iowa batteries are used most often. It's been years since I looked into that though.

There is nothing neccessarily negative about it. (I love aliteration). When used to describe a human being, it is a personality type, basically. Nothing more than that really.

I  alpha males.

Im glad to see this, because when I originally saw the thread topic " What is an Alpha Male" My initial response was to be....the guy that 99% of the women here despise.

Not very functional tests though.

But don't quote me on that ;)

I don't think they "need" to be in control. I think it often comes naturally to them. Nor is it a "dominating" part of their character...it is one of the many facets in their personalities...as in any personality...there are many parts making the whole.

thank you all its interesting to hear more of what i only knew as a vague term ... am sleepy now so i need to go to bed :)

PS i didnt mean sleepy because of this thread lol

Are there any in use today that are relied on as "indicator" tests. From what I recall, indications were the best that the tests could establish.

I don't think it's a serious psychological term for human beings. It's just used to describe a behavior.

Also you have to remember the whole meaning of the term. Alpha males are bullies by nature. Their job is to keep others down.

I don't see it as a positive thing.

Like she said, Ish. It's kinda useless as a diagnostic term.

If it's significant, it's narcissism.
