What is a redneck?

I've got a vague idea. In films I've seen they're portrayed as bigotted, stupid, muscular bullies. Quite often the small town sheriff.

But what are they really and how did the name come about?

And can only white men be rednecks?

Anyone from anywhere can be a redneck.

The Sheriff of Nottingham is a classic redneck with a funny accent.

If I remember correctly, the redneck refers to the burned area above a man's shirt collar from working in the sun. It began as a blue collar class appellation, then moved on to mean small-minded, trashy taste, non-thinking, vaguely illiterate persons.

It used to be a bad thing, now days it's not so bad.

In the south, however, it's the word referring to white trash.

My take on it. I'm a redneck, from Alaska, and not white.

Look no further!

I am a redneck! I got my stock car displayed proudly in the front yard. I have three copies of the Earnhardt memorial poster!

I believe beer should be drank ice-fucking cold, but if its warm, what the hell, its beer.

We hunt small game, in the front yard and will fight the dogs for any turkeys they bring home.

I hunt large game, with my truck. I keep a loaded 30 ought 6 in my pickup window in case the damn antler rat survives the initial impact!

I only have one TV and one bathroom, unless you count outside.

I have more cars than family members and three barns out in back of the trailer home, one still has half a roof. Gonna fix it one of these days.

We by cheap wiskey by the case in the plastic bottles, my old lady drinks wine from the box and long-Island ice tea when she want to appear worldly.

On Saturday nights, we go to the 3.2 bar, do some country dancing and then proceed to trying to kill each other like a bunch of feral Toms, and then Sundays we hand around on the porch talking about the good old days before the country went to hell and when Washington kept its nose out of you business cause it didn't want to see the working end of your double-barrel, 'ol Jesse Jo.

Rednecks are typically the small town folks of agrigultural areas--but anybody can MIMIC a redneck.

The above descriptions are farily accurate in identifying one. Most cowboys are rednecks--but not all rednecks are cowboys. And yes, most rednecks are white--you really don't see the sunburn on too many black folks' necks.

Oh yeah--most rednecks are not educated beyone what the government provides for free--which, of course, means they have very little education at all. Reading is not always mastered.

Anyway, my understanding is that the term 'redneck' was initially started during slavery times. The overseers, being out in the sun all the time, developed bad sunburns - hence, the term redneck. It was a bad thing at that time because the only men who were 'overseers' were usually too poor to own slaves themselves (otherwise, why would they oversee someone else's farm instead of their own). It was a class thing.

Over the years it's become less negative, much like the word 'nigger'. Black people call each other that name all the time - it pisses me off but it happens. Let a non-black call them that and the fight is on. From what I can tell with my friends, 'redneck' is that way now. If someone besides another 'redneck' calls them that, the fight is on.

I don't know for sure if a 'redneck' has to be white but everyone I know that refer to (a) themselves or (b) other people as rednecks have all been white or have been talking about someone white. I've heard people equate it to 'white trash', whatever that is.

Also, I don't think that being a 'redneck' means you're prejudiced, but I know alot of people who considers themselves rednecks that are.

Blackbitch, living in south Florida, I've met a lot of people who can answer yes to 20 or more of these. They're all white, and they pretty much all seem racist. I used to try to say something like "use a different word," for a couple of years but it seems to bait them to say it more. As far as calling each other rednecks, I don't think that's common, but I don't think they would be too insulted either. The favored derogatory name is "Cracker." Ah well...

Redneck,,, Well, you have heard the physical attributes and attitudes as proclaimed by Jeff Foxworthy and others,,, and you have heard a generally accurate description of the origins of the term.

This is the history of the term redneck that my grand dad told me several years ago before he passed on.

The term was orginated in the south during the era of slavery and it was applied to the overseers at first, it was a derivise term meant to keep the overseer in his place. Then it quickly was applied to any white male that worked the land without the benefit of slaves, again, to let them know that they had a place in the southern society pecking order. It was intended as a class term to put down the whites that were too lazy or too poor to attend university and gain enough education to avoid working the cotton, peanut, hay or tobacco fields for a living.

As time went on it came to mean any southerner that was lazy, shiftless, and/or bigoted towards blacks,,, after all, at that time, blacks were the predominate work force for field labor,,, and these poor under-educated white males had to have someone to look down upon and feel superior to, thus the bigotry towards blacks and any other minority.

Up until about the time of WWII it was almost strictly a southern term, used by southerners to describe those beneath them, though some yankees adopted its usage, along with the term cracker, to refer to any southerner not in agreement with their liberal thinking.

Now-a-days it is generally a term that can be applied to anyone with conservative thinking and politics, or anyone with a bigoted stance. It is meant to indicate that the person being refered to is uneducated in the PC society. It can also mean anyone that opposes changes.

The popular portrayal on TV was of a sherrif in the deep south that went out've his way to insure that no waves were created in his small world was very accurate and predominate at one time. AND THERE ARE still some genuine rednecks in the south that have little or no prayer of ever understanding why they are decried and made fun of.

The popular portrayal by Jeff Foxworthy in his comedy act of rednecks has lessened the overall negative nature of the slurr somewhat. Though, when redneck, or more often than not "hillbilly" is uttered with a heart felt passion, it more than likely does mean uneducated, bigoted, small mindedness and cruel.

My son asked me the other day to define "redneck" and I said something like:

"A redneck is someone who doesn't speak properly, who most often *just* has a high school education, who feels that his race is the only race, normally totes a gun in the truck, back of his pants or on the wall in his den that also sports stuffed fish and various animal heads, has no ambition and no tolerance of gays, women with brains nor understands words that have more than 5 letters (I would've said more than 2 syllables but here in TN, every word has more than two syllables!), listens to country music, thinks wrestling and racin' are the only things on TV when 'Cops' isn't on, lives paycheck to paycheck and drinks nothing alcoholic but beer."

My son sat in the car for a few minutes digesting this informaiton and thoughtfully asked me.. "is my Dad a redneck?" hehe

Well, at that point I had to say, "Well, not exactly. He's sort of a mix between a redneck and a good ole boy"

That, of course, leads to the next definition which I edited a little when reciting it to my son.

A good ole boy is one who goes huntin' and fishin', who still has archaic views of his wife's duty, will have a higher education but you'd never know it from all the double negatives he uses when he speaks. He adores guns but he also has a high respect for them rather than a careless attitude. Watches racin' and wrestling and Cops but not when Bill Dance is on. He'll get drunk on Wild Turkey and slap his sis-in-law on the ass during a card game. (a redneck just goes ahead and fucks his sister) Doesn't mind blacks as long as his sister doesn't marry one, is ok with gays as long as they stay the fuck away from him, and thinks all women who aren't attracted to him are lesbians anyway.

So, there y'are. ;-)
