What happens to political dissidents in totalitarian states like Nazi Germany, the USSR, and communist China?

Aren't they imprisoned, brutally tortured, and executed?

The United States is slowly headed towards a full-blown totalitarian police state.

What will happen to dissenters in the US 20-35 years from now? Will they and their entire families be imprisoned, tortured, and then killed?

Strange. I hadn't heard about the wide-scale imprisonment of dissidents. Evidence would be nice.

Incidentally, 'The United States of America has an incarceration rate of 743 per 100,000 of national population (as of 2009), the highest in the world' already. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_incarceration_rate)

I believe there were 46 executions in the USA in 2010, which is 46 more than there were in the whole of Europe (except for Belarus) and the Russian Fedeneration.

Yeah, people in America are sentenced to 60 years in prison over peanut-sized quantities of drugs.
