Israeli strongman Benjamin Netanyahu will deliver a thinly veiled propaganda speech to the United States Congress today. He will offer up the usual bromides about the strong Israel-United States relationship, and had planned to incite maximum political damage on incumbent President Joe Biden, because President Biden has blocked shipment of 500-pound building buster bombs to Israel. All other lethal arms are still being shipped to Israel. Netanyahu desperately needs the 500-pound bombs to continue his endless war in Gaza.
Netanyahu's political standing in Israel has deteriorated to the point where he is aware that he will lose his role as Prime Minister once the Gaza war is finished, and he has a vested interest in continuing this war for as long as possible. With President Biden seen as impeding his war campaign, Netanyahu hoped to divide President Biden's support amongst Americans of Arabic descent and convince them to vote for convicted felon Donald J Trump, who he views as much more malleable.
Roughly 20% of Congress will boycott this political stunt, and instead counter-program his speech with a townhall discussion with the American families who have their loved ones held as hostage in Gaza.
President Biden will not attend Netanyahu's speech, as well as presumptive nominee Kamala Harris. Harris will meet with Netanyahu later this week in a meeting with no cameras. Netanyahu will visit convicted felon Donald J Trump's Mar-A-Lago estate for a joint publicity appearance on Friday.
Netanyahu's publicity stunt, planned and encouraged by far-right members of Congress, has lost virtually all relevance given that President Joe Biden is no longer seeking re-election.
It will be interesting to see what Kamala Harris' policy towards the Israeli strongman will be.
