You're either part of the problem or part of the solution

Leftover drivel from the sixties.

It's not a verbal expression... but I REALLY hate it when people do that thing with their fingers, like they're putting quotation marks around what they're saying.

And... There are some 'issues' we need to discuss.
And... That's neither here nor there
And... In other words
Followed closely by... To make a long story short

I hate it when people say ...."I will phone you back " and they BLOODY well dont ....lol.....

"Tragic" -

That word is so abused, overused, misused....
Tragedy is an exquisite concept, not a TV word for horrible event.

So do you not think we should refer to the events at the WTC, Pentagon and in PA as a trgedy?

...just curious....

There's been an overuse of the word "resolve" lately.

I hate the expression *passes popcorn* and the like.

The things that I just CAN'T STAND are 24/7 and "See you on the flip side." Other than that, nothing bother me, except when that word is used CONSTANTLY!!!!!!!!!

anyhoo instead of anyhow
'tis - but I've explained all that before

OK... where have you explained it, or can you explain it again? 'tis is a valid conjunction of words that i use occasionally and have never heard anyone complain... what's the deal?

Expressions

So many:
The fingers for quote marks are close to the top of my list too. Then
All political doublespeak (collateral damage and friendly fire, being two)
Thank you much (spoken).
Thankyou for...(written) ('Thankyou' as a noun in place of 'Thank you for...')
This is s/he.
I hear you.
Know what I'm saying?
Criteria (for criterion).
But ... remember the language is living and changing continuously. For instance 'media' is treated as a singular, as in 'the media'; its singular remains in use in other contexts.
Care to join the pedants'society?

pagan

I know that it is a valid word, that's not the problem. It is just a personal thing with me is all. :) I think it sounds contrived.

Feel free to use it anytime - I would never presume to tell you what you can and can't post, hon. I was just answering miles' question.

anyhoo, 'tis only a minor thing.

expressions

And
Back to back (not logical, when meaning one after the other).

Grrr!

I absolutely cringe when someone says 'expecially' instead of the correct term 'especially.' (chalk that up to being an anal english major)

I hate it when someone calls something 'gay' to term it 'bad'
(i.e. Man, that show wasgay )

Or when I get PMs or IMs saying "Hey kitten - I'd love to see your pussy!" all I reply with is:

*Hissssssssssssssssss*

hee hee, I love getting out my bitchiness claws now and then ...

*Waving hands*

I just thought of one. I have used this at one time or another, in my depressed days. "Life sucks. Then you die."

"It must be her time of the month"

Fuck that. Guys can be equally pissy, and yet, any time a women is, they blame it on blood. Grow up.

I'm a wee bit anal about the language too.

No, I don't, Pokerman -

They were horrible, but there's nothing tragic about them. Can anyone find a tragic flaw, except that the WTCs were designed and built never to be evacuated fully during a fire? If the designer went down in the plane, and his or her loved one were dining at Windows On The World (or vice versa), you might have a hackneyed sort of tragedy....
These days, every schoolbus accident, every shooting, everything no one likes, is a tragedy. The word ceases to have any real meaning. Even as a misused indicator of true horror, it's abused. Sorry, but it drives me crazy.

Ok, since life loss has no meaning for you, what exactly would you call a tragedy?

Yeah, the word gets used a lot.....but if *ANYTHING* ever fit the definition of a tragedy, the events of 9/11/01 certainly fits. Ignoring the 'literary' definition:

"A drama or literary work in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances."

the events of 9/11/01 fit the other definitions....

*A disastrous event, especially one involving distressing loss or injury to life: an expedition that ended in tragedy, with all hands lost at sea.

*A fatal and mournful event; any event in which human lives are lost by human violence, more especially by unauthorized violence. (as opposed to War)

If those definitions don't fit 9/11/01, then we should retire the word tragedy and banish it from our dictionaries....
